could be vine weevil, if you see white grubs when you take the plant up thats them , eat the roots then grow into bugs and eat the plants, they normally get into pot plants but can be brought in from Garden centre bought plants,

poor you linda, what a day you had, iv had a friend who had same thing happen to his car , he only had it less than ayear when it burst into flames, apparently it can just happen for no reason ;o(( anyway your both ok so thats more important than any car ;o)
