Bowood House & Gardens

Yesterday I paid a visit to Bowood House and Gardens, near Calne in Wiltshire, with my brother whom I don’t see often, but he wanted to take me out for the day, and as I have never been to Bowood decided to go there. It is a stately home that is also a family home. It is Georgian, and has been in the same family since 1754. Lying within "Capability " Brown’s glorious parklands Bowood perfectly captures a bygone age. Rolling lawns, magnificent trees, a tranquil lake, formal flower filled terraces. A very pleasant afternoon.

Heard of Bowood House, no idea why I've heard of it, but its familiar, but never seen it - very nice, beautiful parkland.

Lovely pictures Sylvia glad you enjoyed your day. It seems as is even the stately homes are suffering from lack of water as you can see from the grass in front of the roses.

I've never heard of this place, probably because I am up in Merseyside where we also have stately homes open to the public. One thing I think you missed on this visit and that was the absence of a greenhouse. "WHAT, NO STREPTOCARPUS".

No Streptocarpus ! Actually didn't get right round the place, grounds were so vast. May have been a greenhouse, but didnt find it. Love yours Tanny, I have a small one, but most of my streps are on my windowsills indoors. Very big windowsills full to bursting.

I was lucky when I arrived in this country and married Ann who had a greenhouse in the garden, then some months later when doing a bit of gardening the owner asked me if I would like the old greenhouse. I attached it to the existing one and built benches along each side, thats where the young Streps are sitting. I installed a thermostatic controlled heater in last winter so most of the plants can stay there. With the excess plants I will have them in the house on the bedroom windows.
I'm so glad to be a member of GoY where I can share my hobby with like minded people. Thanks for the comments.

Your very welcome Tanny. I do have a few in my greenhouse outside in the summer, but as no heating they have to come inside for winter.
