It could be the seedhead of Peonia mascula. At the early stage, just wait when it will ripe. Fantastic. Will try to post my pic today.

If it is a seed pod, it looks like it is already ripe, burst open, and displaying the seeds for transport! Maybe Paeonia mlokosewitschii?

Pretty, Kasy! I guess that the black ones are viable? The shape of the pod on P. mlokosewitschii seems to fit better, but the foliage doesn't fit as well as your P. mascula. I wonder if they hybridise? : )
