It’s difficult to tell but could it be potentilla?, if it were potentilla then you can prune these quite hard and would do this early spring.

I have checked with photos after your answer and it is indeed a potentella Thank you very much I shall follow your advise, I have a few more plants in my garden that I need advise on so I shall post photos soon and maybe you good people can help me out. I haven't used this site before so I apologise as my posting seems as bad as my knowledge of plants, and pruning
