I always find they do better in the ground, once established they will quickly increase and once a sharp frost gets them then you can cut them right to the ground, however, I have noticed over the past few years they seem to go on a lot longer due to mild winters, a client of mine has many pots of these which are always kept in a cool greenhouse for winter protection and watered slightly to stop them drying out, these I repot every few years, but like I say they do far better in the ground.
