This is the first year I have tried lobelia and alyssum in my garden. I am finding that some of the alyssum which started off flowering very well, has now lost its blooms. I thought that they flowered continuously all summer? Should I cut them back to promote new growth??

Just clip them over lightly to remove the spent flowerheads. They're resting briefly inbetween flowering sessions, that's all, assuming you're talking about Lobularia maritima or sweet alyssum, and not one of the perennial varieties such as alyssum saxatile.
