Who is your favourite TV gardener?

Answers

Hello...
I am greedy. I have two of them. Monty and Carol klein.

Haven't had a telly since Percy Thrower so I guess it has to be him...he was the first after all!

We don't have a TV either but from what I've seen of them on iPlayer and other folks TV's none of them is worth a damn!

The Beechgrove Garden's Jim McColl.

No pretension, no lifesyle nonsense and no dog taking up half the screen-time.

Love Carols enthusiasm...Monty gets better with age...Diarmuid can revamp my garden any time...but Chris Beardshaw is my favourite

Never watch gardening on TV - I prefer to be out there.

I used to listen to the Paul Parent Gardening Club out of Massachusetts - until he started belching over the air. Made it hard to enjoy my coffee!

I agree with Moon growe with regards to those on tv. My favorite gardeners are those amateurs who post their gardening endeavors on YouTube.

Nigel!
If I have a favourite human though, it must be Monty as he has definitely improved with age. Carol Klein irritates me beyond reason because she emphasises too many words - talks in italics. Knows her stuff though so maybe she's better off screen.

I 'could' go for Jim McColl... he is exactly the same in the flesh as he is on screen.

Dr Who. He makes no pretense to knowing what he is talking about.

My favourite was the late Joe Maiden from Radio Leeds, who sadly passed away recently .He presented the programme for over 22 years, with his co presenter, and died the day before he got yet another Gold at Harrogate flower show, for his veg, which his son had staunchly carried on..over 4,000 followers on Facebook, which says something about a no nonsense down to earth Gardener..After Joe,,mine is Christine Walkden, and Chris Beardshaw..Sunday and Wednesday mornings, will never be the same ..

Geoff Hamilton and Alan Titchmarsh - but of course, neither is presenting gardening programmes now and haven't done for a long time! Geoff Hamilton for obvious reasons, Alan because he's turned into a light entertainer...

Alys Fowler drives me bonkers, Carol's alright but waxes a bit too lyrical for my taste, though a good gardener, Monty I fall asleep to within five minutes... if he hasn't managed to exasperate me in that time, which he usually does! Joe Swift's okayish, knows his stuff.

Bulba's reply is definitely my favourite so far!

I would say probably say the late Geoff Hamilton and Geoffrey Smith were the really great ones on tv where I learnt something. The rest are annoying to varying degrees. Monty Don was ok in his earlier days, but he's become a bit of a self-indulgent bore since he started doing GW from his garden. Carol Klein despite her knowledge is to me the most annoying of the lot of them. I hardly ever watch any gardening tv now.

I'd forgotten about Alan Titchmarsh. I met him once and he's exactly the same off screen as on. Shame he doesn't do gardening progs any more.

We did watch an episode of an allotment series with Charlie Dimmock. After one episode we didn't bother again.

I don't watch TV. but listen to radio podcasts from all over the world.

I have to agree with Bendipa, Geoffrey Smith was a great inspiration in my early day's of gardening. His weekly verbal jousting with Nigel Coburn (RHS judge) on Gardeners' Question Time and his appearances on Gardeners' World and Mr. Smith programmes made gardening informative and fun. But as for today, Carol Klein is the only gardener who gets my vote.

My fav is the gorgeous Alan Titchmarsh. I went to one of his book signings a few years ago and I was star-struck. He spoke to me and I just stood there with my mouth opening and closing but no words would come out! My friends think I've completely lost the plot! I have pics of Alan everywhere! A few years ago, when I worked at a local newspaper office, one of my colleagues took a call from Alan's PA, he told her I was Alan's biggest fan.....a few days later, I received an envelope through the post with a load of signed photos! Pure heaven! My sister met him a couple of years ago when he was working on a new project and she took great delight in sending me a photo with his arm around her! I warned her NOT to kiss him, that would have sent me over the edge with jealousy! Ha ha!

Well you're not alone in your adoration, Greenfingers, I know many women who go all silly over our Alan - I hasten to add I'm not one of that throng, I admire his ability to talk as if he's in your own garden, talking directly to you, in non complicated terms, and teaching as he goes, making it all clear and simple. I used to think (and still do) he was like a lovely uncle or grandad, where you'd feel fond, but certainly not an object for any other kind of desire! Each to his own though, whatever floats your boat.

Chris Packham's the other one many women seem to be besotted with, though he's not a gardener, obviously - I can't stand him, drives me bonkers...

I like Chris Beardshaw. He is on Scottish Television now on Beechgrove Garden. :0)

9 Oct, 2015

Chris Packham? God, no. He's so up himself that he makes me really irritated.

10 Oct, 2015

Exactly, Arbuthnot! A preening cockatoo... glad I'm not the only one who thinks that

10 Oct, 2015

I'm really glad to see I'm not the only one who can't stand the way Carol Klein presents stuff. I don't even watch Gardners World any more as she is usually on there at some point. It is a shame she is so annoying, as she is very knowledgeable.
The Beechgrove gardeners and Chris Beardshaw for me. They at least grow plants which survive in Scotland. :-)

10 Oct, 2015

So, the general consensus is that few of us like Carol Klein's presentation and we can't stand Chris Packham.

11 Oct, 2015

Well you and I don't like CP, arbuthnot, but I know women who'd kill to stand next to him...

11 Oct, 2015

They're idiots.

12 Oct, 2015

Ooh, bit harsh, lol! Each to his own, so long as I'm not witness to it...

12 Oct, 2015

Roger Cook, of This Old House (laugh if you will!!) Best practical advice for new gardeners that I have heard since Sunset's Basic Gardening Illustrated went out of print.

How do I say thanks?
