Have any gardeners found this? I grow tomatoes in my greenhouse, this year has been very productive and I have a good crop, however in my efforts to keep them watered, I occasionally watered them directly from my hose pipe, I now find some of the smaller tomatoes taste of chloride which is disappointing, Our water supply is particularly bad in that respect and is near undrinkable at times but I did not think it would taste my tomatoes.

Its surprising though because the chlorine evaporates from water when its left to stand a few hours. It might be worth investigating an under the sink filter system if its very bad in your area. We just use a filter jug but not for watering plants!

On second thoughts it wouldn't have time to evaporate straight from the hose would it.

Hi welcome to GoY, I only use a watering can to feed them, which I don't do very often, and even then its after I've watered using the hose pipe, but I can't say I've noticed any chlorine taste, there's only a small amount put in to purify the water, Derek.

clorine for future refferance excuse my spelling comes out with boiling hence dogs preferring pond water too fresh water . there taste isn't much better than ours but they are very sensitive too chlorine . it will as said leach out naturaly over a while though . get a water but and run your drainpipe into it . the tomatos are building up and up every day keeping in the chlorine as they are sealed against water loss .

Hi Steve, glad I don't live in Shropshire then, our water tastes great straight from the tap, but it is filtered through peat from the moors before it gets treated, Derek.

If you can genuinely taste chlorine in your drinking water you need to report it to your water company for investigation.
You can buy drinking water test strips on the Internet if you want some sort of evidence to present to your water supplier.
But it could actually be a problem with your plumbing system. There's a DEFRA leaflet (I had one when I had the lead mains water supply pipe replaced but I threw it away)

If there isn't anything about your local water on your water company's website then look up the Drinking Water Inspectorate (there should be a link on the water company website)
