I have a smallish lawn and really hate using my electric mower....the cable drives me nuts...was thinking about getting a hand push one...anyone know of or use one they can recommend?

Can I ask if your current mower is a rotary or a cylinder one? And are you very fit and strong (don't panic, I'm only asking because you'd have to be to use a hand push mower...last time I used one, I thought I'd need orthopaedic surgery afterwards...)

I am pretty fit and would have no difficulty pushing a hand mower. I find the electric rotary mower difficult to opperate and the cord is always in the way.

Hi I have a push mower it's very easy I only have one tip do not let the grass grow too long and you will be fine my dad also has one and he is nearly 70 years young and loves it my hubby got me mine because I kept on running over the power cord and shorting the house lol

If you pop down to B+Q they have a push mower that looks quite good and does a wide cut with various height settings, and is lightweight have a look and see what you think, its a lot less bover than a hover as they use to say lol

I've always used a push mower and wouldn't use anything else, it's very simple and quick, and even my Dad who is 90 occasionally mows the lawn with it! Can't remember what sort it is though.

I use a Brill razor cut hand mower. Absolute doddle to use.
Biggest problem is the grass collection bit.

How about a miniture sheep!
they're quiet, feed themelves and they''ll keep the grass down?

you coul always dump the whole lawn idea all together and putting something else there like a japanese stile garden or a nice seating area with pots natural stone, gravel etc ?

If you've an electric rotary, its easy to use IF you don't do the classic walk along in a straight line and then back again. Stand in one spot, cable behind you and the other end which is attached to the machine wrapped round your wrist or held in your hand along with the handle, mow as much as you can reach and then move left and right, never letting that cable go, gradually moving up the lawn till its done. That's how I do it, and I've never cut through a cable in 30 years, nor found the cable a trial. Can't be done this way with a cylinder electric mower though, poor results with those. If you decide on a hand mower, whoever said above don't leave it too long between cuts nor let it grow long gave some very good advice.
