Thanks - how do Clematis get on in your climate?

I really have no idea., This will be my first. It should do really well. We have mild winters and scorching summers....It seems that all I do is water, water, water the plants. Hasn't rained since May. I am lucky that my dad who lives next door has a well and we have a hose from it.

Clematis like shaded cool roots, and their heads in the sun, so if you do decide to plant one, plant it deeply and put slabs over the root area. They're also greedy plants, so enrich the planting soil, too, and feed it regularly.

Good luck with it!

Thank you for the info. I will keep you up to date. I haven't seen any around here. If I can't find it I have someone to send me this gorgeous one over from UK.

That's good - and I wish you success with it. :-)

I really fancy buying this clematis but someone mentioned its not very hardy. How did it fare through last winter?

13 Sep, 2010

It came through, but it's just not a vigorous one for me. It's so pretty - there is another one called 'Viennetta' - Karensusan has that, I think, and its colouring is very similar. It might well be a better option, but you are in the mild SW, so you should be OK.

Well I got this one too, Spritz, but cant decide where to plant it yet. It may stay in a pot on the terrace. I thought about putting some polystyrene "worms" at the bottom of the pot to keep it warm thru the winter. Have you, or has anyone else tried this?

No - and I think that all that would do is to make the pot lighter and possibly liable to blow over in the wind. You'd need to wrap bubble wrap round the pot and put it in a sheltered corner in the winter.

Thats what I will do. Thanks.
