We used to have a milk churn in the garden with this milk can hanging from the rim. In Victorian times, villagers would come to the farm with milk pails and ask for so many
can fulls of milk.

I can remember going to the farm with our can to fetch the milk for ourselves and a couple of neighbours for a shilling a week , before going to school as well !
