Victorian flower painted milk jug

This little jug was originally white enamel, and I painted it in a Victorian plant and flower design.

Wow... it's lovely! Have you been doing this a long time, or is this a new hobby? Outstanding!!

Wow....thanks girls and BB, I've been doing it a long time, it was quite fashionable about 10 years ago. It's coming back now, but not these colours, more creams golds etc. I used to paint panels on furniture too, cupboards....chests...etc really love it!

I can see why...you do an amazing job! I'd like to try that too! Are the patterns traditional or extemporanious?

Oh my god Lori I m a simple man - being a man suppose that fits - ex what? Thats a word I like but need to know what it means before I drop it into conversation. You have some skill there Janey and would think such lovely things always in demand . Isnt there a demand for your skills on narrowboats?

27 Sep, 2008

Such lovely comments both, ......BB....would be great to work with the narrowboats, but in this area,.....we don't have canals etc, no narrowboats.....
only narrowminds......lol......sorry 'bout that! If you know of any narrowboats that need their cans painting, LET ME KNOW!!

Well, Lori, this jug was painted by a pattern, but the others were my own designs. After you've learnt the different flowers, leaves etc, it's quite
easy to put them together in any style you like. I painted the base coat first with an oil based paint, then when dry used acrylics for the design. Then I painted the whole thing with water based varnish that initially showed white but dried to
a clear shine....waterproofing them. You can get books on folk art painting, I bet
you could get different styles of painting for the French Canadian history, and
history of New England.

I've just finished painting our Victorian fireplace which was it's original black
but I couldn't live with that....so have done it cream, it's really brought out all the
beautiful floral and bird designs on it, think I may skim over the the edges with gilt
to show them even more.

Hi BB!! I suppose a good synonym would be spontaneous. You put it together as you go along...(extemp) or you adhere to a pattern...(design) I've seen some on here wax extemporaneous with verse or lyric...class dismissed! LOL http://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/extemporaneously

Think I get it Lori seems an awful long word for as you go but will endeavour to try and introduce it into my vocabulary.Thank you for taking trouble to educate me. Always willing to learn.

awww...forgive an old pedagogue.. BB... Janey do you have a pic of the fireplace?...sounds lovely. I have a box that I have painted for a friend and want to do stylized bluebells on the top... still looking around for ideas, though... but I have the pics of bluebells from goY for reference.

Pedagogue!!! Hey lori, you and BB having a battle of words??? I always thought Canadians spoke English lol. When I feel a bit braver I might photograph my fireplace! What about stencilled bluebells Lori, you could make your own stencils and do beautiful shading with the colours. What colour have you painted the box?

Think Lori trying to teach me English , Janey which Ok need someone to help while dear Spritz away. Despite our banter really miss her . Perhaps I can speak Canadian only know about treehuggers and grenola.
Visited Nova Scotia and Cape Breton where I couldnt understand a word as mix of french and english.Went to local store to get tomato juice and assistant coulndt understand me had to mimic a Canadian accent and say tomayto juice. Please am I that foreign?

I'm a Canadian who speaks (or tries to) the Queen's English...(that's Eng.. Lish.... not Ing glish...anyway... the bit about toe may toe juice...lol... good 'un, BB, I think someone was enjoying putting you on!!. In some areas of the eastern parts Frenglish is spoken... But where I was born and raised we were staunchly British...and never heard a word of French (other than in French class). We're a big country with lots of regions to explore. Would never try to fill Spritz's wellies..BB!

Well can't really add anything to all the above except I love it! Very pretty. If you ever think of doing them to sell I think you would have a lot of buyers on GOY!
