Sparrowhawk1

I had just come in from the garden when I heard a commotion. Looking through the window I saw that a sparrowhawk (?male) had made a kill in my little watering hole.

Do you think he is drowning it first? They are very intelligent.

A great set of photos Gee - looks like a Starling lunch for this handsome fella. After losing so many of these exciting birds in the 70's through pesticide use, it's a privilege to see them so often now.
Nature provides a natural hunter/prey balance - if we don't interfere with it.

Wonderful photo GEE. The last kill I saw in my garden was a poor little Chaffinch. Before that a near miss on a fledgling blackbird, and before that about 6 sparrows in one go.....goodness knows how. I suppose the starling might have been having his last bath.

'How awful to have to witness something like this...I too
think, this bird is doing what Nature intended it to do.
But, could not bear to have to see it....Thank god, i have not seen this bird although, (wonderful species) in my
garden as yet!! But i had better not speak too soon
as they say Gee....Wonderful, shot though Gee..

I must agree, Freeiaperson, my first instinct was to rush out and try and save the bird but I immediately realised I was far too late and it would have been a futile action. Then I was amazed at the strength and determination of the sparrowhawk - just hope I don't have another visit.

A wonderful set of pictures, well done.

Was that your first visit Gee? Yes you are right, you
cannot interfere with Nature. It is just that we fear so much for the safety of our birds seeing 1 actually killed
like this makes me go cold....What a death!! But i suppose it is quick...
