An Overdue Visit To Dibleys Ruthin North Wales

I thought as things are a little quiet at the moment, you might like to see photographs of my visit to Dibleys near Ruthin in North Wales.

Over the years we’ve tried many times to visit the famous Dibleys Streptocarpus Nurseries – they’ve always been so very difficult to find but it’s now well signposted AND we have sat nav…!!!

We drove along the most narrow lanes and we found it hidden away… Several greenhouses and access to a huge garden.

It was a little damp underfoot, but I decided I wanted to see the gardens before I ventured into the Greenhouses. Unfortunately the trains weren’t running. Perhaps they had problems with the wrong type of leaves… lol!

The gardens are quite steep in places and after all the rain we had had it was a bit slippery. Silly me didn’t have my wellies… never mind I managed and took a few pictures of the garden.

Time to walk back to the Greenhouses. These are what I came to see…

They also had lots of other interesting plants too…

I’ve got one of these Parrot Plants!

I only had room in the car to bring one home :o( However I chose this one it was the Chelsea plant of the year 2010 STREPTOCARPUS HARLEQUIN BLUE a beautiful plant…

Thanks Paul. The Streptocarpus plants are in some beautiful colours aren't they? I wish I'd taken pictures of the name tags now, just so I can remember the different varieties!

I like the rosy halo and the last one bestbut what a lovely place to visit, and I agree Paul its been horrible today, cold, grey and miserably damp......

Oh my goodness!!!!! however did you choose out of all of them.
When one visits a place like that I always think its a good job lack of room and also not having a bottomless pit of a bank account can save one from a mega mistake, lol....But oh the wishful thinking that goes on.....
Thanks for sharing Petal, its a very grey soggy day here, even a trip to the g'house didn't happen as I'd need my wellies just to go down the path.....

What a big place it is. I've got a few Streptocarpuses, including Harlequine Blue. They're nice plants to grow.

Hi All - As it was such an awful afternoon yesterday I thought a little colour and a walk around Dibley's was called for :D glad you enjoyed it!

ML I didn't go here with my friend Poppylover - it was OH lol! It would be a great place for you to visit when you are up that way. But only if the weather is good. The lanes are very very narrow and it's a very isolated/rural spot - but well worth a visit :o)

Neellan you must go this summer, but go with a friend so they can keep an eye on the road signs!

I decided on Harlequin Blue because the I though the colours would look good in my Sitting Room! I spent ages in the shop while OH went back to the car to read the paper lol!

Hi Junna, Yes they are all very attractive colours and there are just so many as well!

OOoooooh just spotted this. Green with envy. You know this is one of the nurseries I would love to visit. Might be just as well I wasn't with you otherwise it would have been dark before you eventually got back to the car (not good when the OH is waiting!) I got Harlequin lace from the show I went to with Meadowland, that's beautiful too. We'll have to do a swap of leaf cuttings.

I thought you'd like to see this Poppy. I know you like the Streptocarpus. How are all the leaf plugs that you adopted from Hampton Court?

13 Feb, 2013

Yes Petal Ive saved it to my favourites. Thank you for sharing. Out of the 9 plugs 8 are still going strong and one is decidedly ropey! Not bad though. Its surprising how different they all are in leaf, never mind the flowers! Cheaper and much more satisfying to grow them on yourself. btw I think the 14th picture is Denim. I have that one its a beaut! Ill do you a cutting.

Thanks Poppy x Do you think the dark cerise pinky one is Texas Hot Chili?

Have just come across my Dibleys catalogue and have found that they do a Special Streptocarpus gift for Mothers Day, Easter and Birthdays. The plant comes in a ceramic pot with enough slow release food for 4 months posted to addresses within the UK. Log on to the website for more details www.dibleys.com

Lovely blog...it all looks very lush there..not surprising considering all the rain over the last year!
I love the little orange flowers on what looks like a Begonia and the S.Harlequin Blue is stunning.Nice photos!

14 Feb, 2013

Thanks Paul - I think you're right it is a begonia. I should have taken a picture of the label too! :D

When I go to gardenes now, I do that, if it's a plant I'm not familiar with.Seems odd, I suppose, but it's frustrating trying to remember plant names!

This is where digital camera's are just so handy. You wouldn't waste the film on a 35mm! lol

Wow that place is like a "diamond in the rough" You really are a trooper Tracey. I liked your selection. I would have picked the same one-good choice & great blog!

Thanks Paul! It was the colour that drew me to Harlequin Blue! It's a very soft blue and a creamy lemon... Goes really well with my colouring in both the conservatory and the Kitchen... ;o)

It's very eye catching, yet not jarring. I was looking at it myself at violetbarn.com. Are these easy to propagate from leaf cuttings? I also liked another one called "black cherry" you can guess the color - a deep burgundy.
