Peaceful? .... Just for the moment!

As the weather has been unbearably hot here over the past few days, we decided to take a picnic and go for a walk from the next highest village along a leafy forest track that leads to a pretty little church – the church of San Roque -the Shepherds’ Saint. So, picnic cooked and packed (tortilla – what else?!), off we went along the track, stopping occasionally to admire the wonderful scenery. We live here and see it every day, but it never fails to amaze us!

The first picture shows the magnificent Sierra de Pena Sagra and the second shows our little village tucked into the hillside (You may see it in the centre of the photo if you squint really hard!).

Along the way were clouds of various butterflies; Marbled Whites, Fritillaries, Brown Argus, Sooty Copper, Speckled Wood, Woodland Ringlet, Small Tortoiseshell and – finally – the only Jersey Tiger Moth that would keep still while I photographed it! Sorry about the quality of the photo – my camera needs updating!

It wasn’t a very long walk (purposely – it was sooooo hot!) so after about an hour we’d reached the church, which was being prepared for the fiesta in a few days’ time but, for the moment, all was tranquil and serene:

The church has a Bolus Court laid out where local teams will pit their wits and skills against each other, then there will be dancing and eating! Next week it will look like this:

Then, the bar will be packed up and driven away, the people will go home, the court will be cleared of any rubbish and the little church will return to dozing in its quiet place on the mountain amongst the trees.

Hope you enjoyed the walk?
