A Cold & Snowy Garden

I finally felt well enough to get out and take some photos of the garden – or rather the snow in the garden. You can see the shrubs are about the only thing that is visible right now…

These were all taken around 3pm today. The last 3 from an upstairs window looking towards the Rafford Hills.

Thanks Louise

Very atmospheric pics.
They give a good indication of the chill and the depth of the snow. :o)
What do your cats think about this weather ?

9 Jan, 2010

Thanks Terra the girls rush out and do the necessary then straight back in. Though daughter cat follows Mr MB to our potting shed in the hopes of a mouse or two... A little bit of snow does not bother them but this is just too deep and cold for them.

9 Jan, 2010

Yes. The snow does look extra deep.!
......sensible cats to get back indoors quickly. lol. :o)

~Timeless photos that look like old Christmas cards~certainly looks like a thick blanket that won't be going anywhere in a hurry!~glad to hear you are up and about~

9 Jan, 2010

Thanks all, very thick blanket Arlene and not likely to vanish for a while yet. If I feel up to it we'll go for a wee walk tomorrow and hopefully I'll get some more pix.

glad you are feeling a bit better mg. Lovely views and I can almost feel the cold air blowing down here. we have had daytime temps around 0 today some slight thaw but freezing hard now.

9 Jan, 2010

Pleased you were well enough to have a wander Mg, hope you continue to improve, photo`s are lovely especially the views..........

Thank you for braving the weather to gain these pics....appreciated. Glad you are feeling better Moongrower. :-))

Hi all thank you for your positive comments it is now -7 and due to drop to -10 again. Thankfully Mr MB dug up some parsnips earlier for dinner and reported that the frost is only in the first inch or so of the ground... the snow has done its job!

9 Jan, 2010

ooh parsnips havent had them for ages.
glad the snow is doing its thermal blanket job.

9 Jan, 2010

ive had lots of parsnips over xmas and newyear with honey roasted in oven umm

9 Jan, 2010

Parsnips are, in my opinion, one of the unsung wonders of the veggie world!

9 Jan, 2010

~agreed! We always have them with Roast beef, etc and they taste sweeter for being frosted!

9 Jan, 2010

Yes they do Arlene, in fact I was always told not to harvest them until they had been frosted - not a problem this year! I don't think our overwintering cabbages have survived though...

10 Jan, 2010

Mrs MB complained that the parsnips themselves were frozen! They were not - just 'firm' ;-))))

10 Jan, 2010

Well done, Mg - you must be 'on the mend' if you felt able to go out in that lot! Keep smiling - it won't be here for ever. :-)))))

10 Jan, 2010

Thanks Barbara... Mr MB they were so frozen (stick tongue out!). Still -11 here as of 11:15.

10 Jan, 2010

Loely photos and blog glad you are feeling a bit better.

10 Jan, 2010

Thanks Clarice too damned cold to be outdoors today...

10 Jan, 2010

not bad here mrs MB as its 3c alot better, whats the temp there for you

10 Jan, 2010

still -9.5 Sandra

10 Jan, 2010

bbbrrr oh no, poor you, keep indoors and warm, hope it changes soon

10 Jan, 2010

Just been out with a large pot of spuds for the birds... we bought a whole sack for £15 and I am cooking up the little ones for the birds, they love them! Along with all sorts of other goodies but the tatties go out as a separate thing.

10 Jan, 2010

Glad to read that you are feeling a bit better. A walk sounds a good idea for the fresh air, etc. Am planning one this week - but round the interior of a tropical glasshouse. :-))

10 Jan, 2010

good thinking MB i may do that tomoz, a "cheap cheap" meal :o))

10 Jan, 2010

Yup Sandra - I don't begrudge the birds the seed and stuff but it does add up! Another meal I produce for them is stale bread mixed with very cheap, and smelly, dog food... this goes down a treat!. I will add it isn't the white sliced bread which I don't think is meant to be good for them. I guess cheap packets of biscuits mixed with things would work too.

10 Jan, 2010

that sounds a great idea to, mine have wholemeal bread haha i cant eat white, with IBS, so im sure wholemeal will be ok for them :o)

10 Jan, 2010

Your garden looks a bit like ours ! Good tip with potatoes.Made extra mash today to go with stew so they will get it tomorrow !

10 Jan, 2010

I usually make my own bread so know it hasn't got any additives. I didn't bother to mash the tatties just cu them up small. Meant the crows and other big birds could come and grab a piece and take it off to where they felt safe to eat.

10 Jan, 2010

im just making dinner so ive sorted out all rooted spuds from xmas and a whole big pan full boiled up and drained for morning, thanx MB :o)

10 Jan, 2010

Good idea...we get rooks in and they just grab and fly off.
Sandra...will do the same !

10 Jan, 2010

they will have a feast tomoz ray, roast spuds left and sweet potatoes to, wont be able to take off after this lot haha

10 Jan, 2010

Tempted to say you spoil them Sandra but we just the same ! Lol Gives us a lovely warm feeling to see them all tuck in !!

10 Jan, 2010

haha your worse than me , well both of you, so thats twice as bad as me lol

10 Jan, 2010

Lol !

10 Jan, 2010

:o))

10 Jan, 2010

lol

10 Jan, 2010

Lovely photos Carol, glad you are feeling a bit better now. Doesn't it soon wear thin though not being able to see your garden.

11 Jan, 2010

Very thin Dr B

11 Jan, 2010

I hope it clears soon for you, even if only a little bit. I find it so depressing. I hope you'll be feeling better soon.

11 Jan, 2010

Hywel I wish I could say the snow is going but so far it just sits like a great lump and doesn't shift at all apart from melting slowly off the roof where it gets the sun... I've a feeling it will still be here for weeks yet - sigh!

11 Jan, 2010

:o(

11 Jan, 2010

~ hope it starts thawing soon MG!` we had a bit of a thaw here today as the temperature went up to 1 but more snow forecast for tomorrow!

11 Jan, 2010

it is 1.7 outside at not quite 8am... so though I can't actually see it the snow must be starting to thaw!

12 Jan, 2010

Thawing here too Mg, it's 2.4 at the moment :-)))))
I never thought 2.8 degrees (Sundays high) would look so good ;-))

12 Jan, 2010

Right now it would be hard to say that the snow was shifting at all... well it is sliding of the greenhouse roof but that is it!

12 Jan, 2010

Probably is going. The 'bobbies helmets' in the tops of containers and garden structures have shrunk dramatically and I can actually see some plants! If the weather stays like this for a few more days then most of the snow may go.

12 Jan, 2010

Fingers crossed...

12 Jan, 2010

Rain here in South Norfolk today. All is becoming slushy and horrible. The snow on the pond's netting panels has all gone and I can see the fish again. The forecast is good so with luck, let's hope we are on our way. Hope you feel the same up North, MG! Great pictures but hopefully history, eh?

14 Jan, 2010

Ther eis a very slow thaw happening where we live which is not that far from the coast. Inland they are still getting blizzards with many roads closed.
