Parsnips

Yesterday, being a good day for harvesting root vegetables, we lifted the first of our parsnips. I had been concerned that the roots were not particularly large – I was wrong!

Look at these woppers…

Over a foot each in length and weighing in at nearly two pounds a piece… I foresee a lot of curried parsnip soup in the MoonBulb household lol

I LOVE parsnips...and guess what I actually forgot to do this year...yes, sow parsnip seed! It takes so long to germinate and I like to try to get in in in February, but what with one thing and another, I overlooked it!
These are beauties...and curried parsnip soup is a favourite in our household as well! Must be these long Scottish winters!

Yummy! I love parsnips...especially roasted. Do you ever make parsnip chips or crisps? Love'em. ;-))

19 Oct, 2009

No Spritz but given the quantity of parsnips we have grown could give it a try. Don't think we sowed our parsnip seed until March time Bscott...

19 Oct, 2009

yummerama.

19 Oct, 2009

Well done Mg.dont think I`ve ever had parsnip soup but love them roasted, yours are whoppers lets hope they taste as good as they look.....

19 Oct, 2009

On they do we ate part of one last night along with roast tatties, roast beef and spinach beet. Followed up with apples crumble. All the veg. home grown :-) And they'll taste even better once they've been properly frosted...

19 Oct, 2009

Strange, that - the same applies to sprouts, doesn't it!

19 Oct, 2009

Frosty weather starts to convert starch in the roots to sugars, at least with root vegetables. Wonder how long it will be before I go off parsnip soup!!! No, I lke them and I am impressed with how well they have grown.

19 Oct, 2009

Yes sprouts definitely taste better for a frosting - probably why so many folk don't like them, the only experience they have of them is at Christmas and often they have not been well enough frosted by then - as we did not grow any this year it will be savoy cabbage on our dinner table - lol

19 Oct, 2009

You and B. are so good with your veggies - it ALMOST makes me want to grow some! (I did say 'almost'!!)

Kindly stop waxing lyrical about them - it's making my mouth water! LOL.

19 Oct, 2009

Of course there are the potatoes and lovely big onions safely stored in the shed. Lots of broad beans and peas in the freezer - oooh. Come along Spritz, get tempted, this is the best time of the year in the veggie garden.

19 Oct, 2009

I did say 'ALMOST'....I love my flowers too much to dig any up, B. Just couldn't do it!

19 Oct, 2009

The only way we are doing this is using neighbours gardens... ours is jammed fully of rock garden plants, bulbs, trees (far too many planted to close to each other - lol) and shrubs. Never mind the council and their allotments - or lack there of - chat to your neighbours and you'll be amazed how many of them are happy for you to grow veg. on their land. There is at least one more garden near us we could 'invade'.

19 Oct, 2009

Brill blog MG. :~))

19 Oct, 2009

Not here, there's not, unfortunately, Mg. Farmers hang on to all their land!

19 Oct, 2009

Not 'farmers' Spritz... neighbours with gardens they can't be bothered (I nearly used another word) to do anything with...

19 Oct, 2009

Has anyone tried the 'Landshare' web site. Set up by River Cottage and Channel 4 to encourage garden owners and garden 'wanters' to come together and share ground to mutual advantage. Just this weekend I had to turn down an offer of an organic garden in Forres becuase we have enough on our plates already.

19 Oct, 2009

9pm and we have just finished a supper of spicy parsnip soup and freshly baked bread, all washed down with a glass of red wine. The second glass brought out even more of the flavour. Jus' divine.

19 Oct, 2009

Sorry, Mg - I should have explained better. We live in a hamlet with only 51 dwellings. Two are farmers (one next to us), many are mostly fields with horses, some are cottages, with tiny patches of garden, there are a few modern houses with well-cared for gardens - and next door's garden is all in the front - they certainly wouldn't want veggies in their lawn! So - no land here!

19 Oct, 2009

Oh well... perhaps others will be able to do what w have done.

Ian, all I did was post a pix of two parsnips and get excited... come on I bet you've got lots of veggies to enthuse about :-)

19 Oct, 2009

Hic! Bulb-----aholic! LOL.

19 Oct, 2009

Not really MG, this year has been disastrous in my veggie beds. Plenty of potatoes, a few onions and some runners and carrots was all I could manage. :~((

19 Oct, 2009

Then I better do another blog. sharing the successes and failures of out veggie growing...

19 Oct, 2009

I always thought it was best to leave parsnips until the frost got at them. I like them roasted :o)

20 Oct, 2009

Spritz - why not plant a few veggies amongst your flowers? So many of them have interesting foliage that can only add to the overall effect of planting. Plus, there's always 'companion planting' where certain plants 'protect' veggies by attracting the beasties that like to feed on them. Go on - give it a go! There's only enjoyment in it!

20 Oct, 2009

Hywel parsnips are better after the frost has got to them but we've had at least one frost. That said lifting and using within 24 hours also makes a big difference not just to parsnips but to any veg.

20 Oct, 2009

Yes they're nicer if used straight away. I didn't realise you have already had frost. That's early :o(

20 Oct, 2009

I seem to remember one GoYer from ?Somerset? reporting scraping ice off the car a couple of weeks ago.

20 Oct, 2009

Yes. It was in south of England somewhere. We've had none yet. We don't usually get any until sometime in November.

20 Oct, 2009

Wow, really ?
I wonder if they live in the middle of the county then because here on the north coast we rarely get to that stage :-))))))))))
Here seems to be a very sheltered area, thankfully.

20 Oct, 2009

I've remembered. It was Fluff in Dorset . Her windscreen wipers were stuck to the glass :o(

20 Oct, 2009

Yikes :-/

20 Oct, 2009

We are only a few miles from the coast, as the crow flies, but we can and do get frost here. In fact I've seen frost at the water's edge on the beaches near us.

20 Oct, 2009

We get frosts in winter and spring but autumn is relatively mild here. I never remember digging parsnips up until at least Christmas time. Ocasionally it's even into the new year before we get frost. I remember that on several years.

I only remember the sea freezing in Swansea Bay once ever. There were big ice floes on the beach about 6 ft thick. It was said we were going into an ice age. Now it's global warming.. lol

20 Oct, 2009

Nariz - I'd better get the shoehorn out again! I had considered growing some of the more decorative veggies between the flowers - but space! That's the difficulty!

Hywel - I can do without a second 'Ice Age' winter, thanks - so please keep your icebergs YOUR side of the Bristol Channel! ;-)

20 Oct, 2009

Oh they will float easily over to the Somerset coast... lol
Actually it was in the 80s I remember it. I hope it never hapens again :o(((

20 Oct, 2009

OHHHHHH....so do I, Hywel! We were in Kent and got icicles 6' long hanging from the gutters! We were cut off by snowdrifts for at least a week. Nasty.

You know I hate snow! I've said it often enough!

20 Oct, 2009

Yes both of us .. lol

20 Oct, 2009

It is POURING with rain here, Hywel! About time - the garden needs a good soaking! 8mm in half-an-hour - so keep going, rain!

20 Oct, 2009

We don't often hear you say that lol
It's pouring here too. Very heavy. We haven't had that for a while now. I hope it's only for today though.

20 Oct, 2009

Wonderful rain all day here too :-)))
My garden's SO happy :-))))))))

20 Oct, 2009

i just love honey roasted parsnips, i always drizzle honey on them for xmas dinner, ummm

20 Oct, 2009

A bit of ginger works with them too...
Think it is time we had a recipe section on GoY.

20 Oct, 2009

I agree MG but will the 'boys'?

20 Oct, 2009

oh yes that would be good moongrower,

20 Oct, 2009

Well, this 'boy' has no problem with a recipe section.

20 Oct, 2009

Lol BA I meant the boys upstairs, (Ajay and Peter) :~))

20 Oct, 2009

No idea Ian - guess I have to ask them lol

20 Oct, 2009

Sounds like a good idea - I often come across "what do I do with this?" questions and have already offered up my Green Tomato Chutney recipe. How about it Peter and Ajay?
