I was going through an old cupboard the other day and found loads of old books. They don’t have dates that I can see but I just loved the illustrations, so thought I’d share a few…
I especially love this cover, so detailed..

No doubt we would be termed as pagan if this was a front cover now!

Inside the books were a few colour plates and a few line drawings..

There are loads more, some I plan to sell because they are wasted in a cupboard and some I will keep.
There were also a couple of story books which I thought I should read before selling. They were an extraordinary read, written so long ago the writing style completely different to nowadays.

I also found a book where every drawing has been coloured in, not so neatly, by hand!!! Hope it wasn’t me!

I haven't googled them yet!
I saw that the Antiques Roadshow was at Cirencester recently (unless it was a repeat!) I have loads of bits and pieces I would like to take but don't like the idea of standing in a queue all day!! We have started playing the red button game to guess the value.....it's jolly hard!!

very nice Lulu - great to uncover all the hidden things from the past - sometimes anyway

Just did a quick google, these books are really quite old but only worth about 10 quid!

29 Nov, 2012

you only need two interested buyers to push the price up at the right auction

I think there are a few of these books around, so not rare.

well i like them! you might get more by putting them on a stall yourself rather than let a dealer or auction house take the profits?

I love old books. These are great.

I'm banned from bookshops, attics and old cupboards because once in .... I won't come out! I went up into the loft of our old house in Essex several weeks before we moved here, with a view to removing stored bits and bobs. Several hours later Partner returned from work to find me still up there, covered in dust, reading my old childhood books! No usual warm welcome; no dinner prepared; no packing achieved! Kindle? You can keep 'em! Give me a hardback book with words on paper pages that smell of knowledge, wisdom, poetry and magic!

Hear, hear Nariz!
You may be right ST!
Thanks Dwyllis, glad you enjoyed seeing them!

They're brilliant Lulu, I still have some of the old Ladybird books from when I was little, not as old as these, they were pretty tatty from being well read but recovered them and read them to my children when they were little.
Agree Nariz its just not the same reading from a Kindle as turning the pages of a real book with a young child :-))

Oooo Pam I'll have to try ebay, I've been going mad trying to find an old crochet pattern, I made a lovely crochet hat and jacket for my niece getting on for 30 years ago now, covered in crochet flowers, everyone commented on it and my sister kept it for years after it was outgrown before giving it to a friend, now my niece has a young daughter and thought it'd be nice to make her this jacket, I've searched all my boxes of patterns but can I find it!!!!!!, can't think I'd throw it away, no doubt its somewhere 'safe' I've scoured the net but can't find anything remotely similar, may have to make up my own design if I don't find it soon.
Ebay here I come :-))

Oh Lou these are fab, good enough to frame and put on the wall me thinks!! Take a lookey on e.bay and see if there are any similar being sold, it will give you a rough idea of value!

30 Nov, 2012

Hmm Simbad I,ll have a look through mine....I inherited all sorts from various people....mostly knitting though
Would just the flowers help or do you need the hat as well and the jacket?

30 Nov, 2012

I have a few books which are quite damaged...some of the illustrations could be cut out and framed.....would you like one for a christmas prezzie? but you get to frame it!

30 Nov, 2012

Ooh you are a charmer Snoopy. :0)

30 Nov, 2012

Hey Lou, you could frame them and sell them at the fairs that you do!! Make you some dosh. :)
Interesting Lou, looked on e.bay, tapped in R.Caldecott books, well the prices vary from £23....£44.....£85...... each etc take a look.!!

Better than selling them, scan them in and sell copies! good copies would be as good as the original, and you'd still have the book to treasure.

There's a smell about old books that I find irresistable; I used to haunt jumble sales as a kid, bring home stacks of books that were old even then. My pearl was a book published in 1901, while the Boer War was still going on.

Books were built to last in those days, no cheap paperbacks that fell apart after a few readings.

I think there are two framers in Tetbury.....might give it a go! IF I can fit anything else into my car on market stall days!!

Ooo I wish Snoopdog, lol, the big 50 next month aaargh, decided to have birthdays once every 7 years now :-)
No luck on ebay Pam although I did find a few plain jacket and bonnet patterns that I could probably adapt, very kind of you to look through your patterns for me :-), someone else out there must have it too!!!!!!,think I can remember how to do the flowers, its ages since I've done any crochet, did find this pattern for some cool baby baseball slippers, lol.

if the framers are too expensive wilkinsons do very reasonable frames

30 Nov, 2012

They do Sticki even M&S do!

1 Dec, 2012

Do you have a shop called "The Range". One opened toward town, bit like wilko but selling branded artist paints and paper and good quality frames amongst a lot of other things like wilko's at reasonable prices

1 Dec, 2012

Didn't know about m & s, thanks GM

1 Dec, 2012

No such thing here Pam! More's the pity. Actually most £ shops sell frames too, dont know how they can do it!
