Caspar...My Friendly Ghost..

Many of you will remember Caspar, one of my companions in the house and especially the garden, never very far from my side…

Last week he became very lethargic, no energy and wasn’t eating or drinking, he was a comical fellow and never drank anything except tapwater, even though there was water in a dish he always wanted it straight from the running tap, he used to sit in the sink headbutting the tap for us to turn it on, he learnt that from when we first had him..

We took him to the vets on Thursday, they kept him in overnight put him on a drip because he was so dehydrated, and gave him scan and blood tests, within two hours we had the results of the blood test, Caspars kidneys were failing, the vet said they would flush his kidneys out and ring us in the morning, the news wasn’t good, the scan showed our lad had a tumour and it was affecting his kidneys, liver and his lungs, they offered other tests but how could we put him through more knowing its was only delaying the inevitable, he couldn’t even get his drink from the tap and was fading away before our eyes, never once showed it but must have been in pain.
I went to him and he purred as soon as I picked him up for his cuddle, Caspar went to sleep in my arms, we brought him home and have laid him to rest near his favourite sleeping place….

He loved to lay near that Hebe especially on sunny days, I have planted Pansies and Violas over his last resting place, smiling faces for my little grumpy face that we all loved and will miss so much.
Sleep Well Caspar. xx..

Sue, I'm very sorry to hear of your loss of Casper. I know exactly how you feel because I went through the same thing with my beloved Tommy. He was born in my closet and I had him for his full 15 years. The whole neighborhood 'adopted' him as he was welcomed everywhere. Tommy was savagely attacked by a group or rogue dogs and could not be saved. After 6 months, I went to the animal shelter and rescued Costello from death row. That was the perfect solution - death took one, but I rescued another...and Costello knows it.

Thankyou all, I know in my heart that it was definitely the right decision for him, its just the shock of it happening so quickly, Caspar showed no signs of being ill except in the last few days, the sad thing is that we expected it to be Morgan that we would have to take next, he's my daughters choc/lab 13yrs old now and time is taking its toll on him, we touch him in the mornings to see if he is ok, poor lad is blind in one eye, deaf, very wobbly at times and has reached the sleeping all the time stage, doesn't want to be with us or Brynner for more than a few mins at a time and barks to be allowed back into his bedroom space in the utillity, however he is eating and drinking properly and has no problems controlling his toilet, we keep hoping he'll go in his sleep but being realistic that is not going to happen and one day soon we'll have the decision to make again....

I am so sorry to read about your lovely cat. Very hard for you and to have the worry about your daughter dog as well. The violets are a lovely idea. Take care Jen

Oh Sue I am sorry. Such a difficult decision to make and so heartbreaking.

The worst thing about having pets is how short a time we get with them. But they don't half make life grand with their silly antics. I hope You, your daughter and Morgan can enjoy whatever time he has left with you.

Oh dear Sue, I had quite a lump in my throat as I read your Blog. I know only too well how heart wrenching it is to loose a much loved pet this way, we lost our little Tigtwo in similar circumstances.

I'm glad you're able to have Casper there in the garden, The pansies and violas are a lovely touch to his favourite spot.

Sorry to hear this Lincslass.

Poor old chap - its usually kidneys with the older ones isn't it, and always a heartbreaking decision to realise the time has come for an end to suffering - but the house feels so empty for a while. Bless his little grumpy face. The hebe will always be special now.

Oh Sue love xxx

So many lovely Goy pets playing over the rainbow bridge. .....imagine them all frolicking together in the sunshine ?

12 Jul, 2016

Thankyou, I like to think he's happy with Malik over that bridge, have to keep that picture in my head, he wasn't actually an old cat really, only 9yrs which as the vet said is not old for a cat really, we think it was possibly in his genes as his sister died from the same problem two years ago....

12 Jul, 2016

So sorry Sue - but you did the best for him - it is a terrible decision to make - kind regards - Jane

12 Jul, 2016

9 is young as you say, one day the'll understand the role genetics play I'm sure.....
Much more than we imagine I think

Sue I am so sorry to hear about Caspar. Your garden will seem very strange now, but you'll always have happy memories of your friend. I send my deepest sympathy :o) x

12 Jul, 2016

You must be feeling so lost without him. He will always be close by to those who loved him the best of all.

13 Jul, 2016

I just keep going back to that second picture and wanting to pick him up and give him a purry cuddle. What a grand pusscat he was. Thank goodness for the invention of photography.
I still miss our dear Chester five years on and two cats later...some of them just leave a permanent hole in the heart.

13 Jul, 2016

Thankyou all, I do miss him, he was such a loving cat and never very far away whether I was inside or out, shared my chair every night and had a habit of headbutting me if he thought I wasn't paying attention, we still have Tipsy who is 18yrs old now but she is a stroppy female who ignores us except at mealtimes, my daughter has Toffee, he is nearly 2yrs old now, a very playful lad and also very affectionate but somehow Caspar just had that special way with him, probably because he was brought up as a housecat and has left a huge gap....
