Oh dear what can the matter be?

Turning into my drive I couldn’t believe my eyes…..my Aucuba had turned dark brown…..

but not quite all over

What can have caused this dreadful devastation?……..
…….my mind goes back 2 years to similar devastation wrought upon the next 2 shrubs along the drive. Thuja and a Euonymous both had large brown adjoining areas suddenly appear.

I asked advice from the wise folk of GOY:

“maybe it’s cat pee” came an answer
“oooooh NO” said I “not unless the cat is at least 2’6” tall and has a very big bladder"

Back came the suggestion
“maybe it’s the work of The Great British Big Bladdered Lion, commonly known as the GBBBL

Now such a beast has never been sighted hereabouts so I conclude on the balance of probability that it’s the work of that other GBBBL suggested by Terratoonie, The Great Berkshire Bush Burning Lorry. This had indeed visited our drive on both occasions to deliver hard landscaping materials.

So the moral of this sorry tale fellow Goyers is never to let the GBBBL on to your property if you have bushes along your drive.

I`m with Tetrarch and the air would have been blue, there are times when the lady disappears....
Mega haircut or a pair of gloves and just strip the leaves maybe Lily. It is a shame though....

Crikey! Lily! I've never seen that before, it's from exhaust pipes on lorries you say?! That's terrible! I'm so sorry, I'm sure it'll recover after you've pruned the dead bits out, but it's not going to be pretty for a while...och, that's awful, just as Terra says!

Well Tet, the driver had made a getaway before I knew but yes the air was blue and it wasn't with exhaust fumes!
I couldn't believe my eyes and yes a major haircut is called for Joanella and LL but I think it will grow back....eventually.
LOL Terra, it is indeed EFFIN AWFUL, how do you think them up!! I thought you might remember the GBBBL :o)
Yes Libet it's the exhaust pipes, we actually quizzed the driver of the skip lorry and he said the exhaust was under the vehicle but the building materials arrived while we were out.......

Oh poor Lily, I'm with Tet.I would have felt like giving him a thump !
I had no idea that amount of damage can be done by exhaust pipes.

Oh, Lily, that's not a pretty sight for you to see from your drive ... the vehicle must have been parked there with the engine running for quite some time ... how are you going to rescue the Aucuba now? I wouldn't know where to start! . . . . .

I am really sorry to see that Lily. Can you not send a picture to the company and ask them why they had to leave the engine running?

11 Aug, 2011

What ashame, think i'd complain to the company aswell.

Ah well Val, I'm not one to dwell on things, what's done is done. At least it made me smile to remember the Big Bladdered Lion and some GoY fun with members both past and present :o))
Hi Shirley, at least I can only see it on going out and coming home so it doesn't interfere with my general enjoyment of the garden. I shall get snipping soon and see what's left.......
I thought you'd had one too many Terra, but i knew what you meant!
It's a good idea to make them aware Denise. I expect they have to leave the engine running to operate the hydraulic hoists on the lorries to unload the goods. :o((

The coincidence is too great and the damage too extensive to be anything else we think. I must get out there and cut it back as it sooks so awful :o((
