Bye bye Birdies

I love feeding the birds but unlike my front garden, the back garden has never been very popular with the local bird population other than wood pigeons. That’s even in spite of my splashing out on a feeding station for them, the ungrateful little whatsits!

Well, I decided, if they won’t make use of it then I will, so off I went to the GC aware that I might have to make do with what I could get, given that it was midsummer.

Six weeks on here is the result of my idea….

I also replaced the rejected bird feeders in the Prunus tree with these baskets planted with odds and ends from around the garden

Just the thing to perk up my slightly flagging garden. :o))

Lovely as the birds are, I don’t think they’re as pretty as these butI do hope they’ll discover my feeding station when it reverts back to it’s real function once winter sees off these summery interlopers.

Great idea Lily, looks lovely. I have lots of birds in the bath, but not too many on the feeder. A great spotted woodpecker was on the damson tree last week, that was exciting.

That's a lovely demonstration of lateral thinking Lily! And isn't it just beautiful! Well done you!

They look really pretty Lily, I always hang baskets in my trees when they first go outside at the beginning of the summer, also on very hot days (not many this year tho) also when I go away.
Good idea to hang from the feeders, bit too late for this year but I`ll have to remember for next.
The birds are only just starting to revisit my tables and feeders occasionally, but there`s plenty of food around still which is good for them and my purse, lol. Thanks for a great tip...

There lovely! Very showy. Love that first pic. It's odd that the bird didn't make good use of the feeders.

Lily that looks lovely .
The birds don't really need feeding in spring and summer anyway, its only the bird food manufacturers have conned everybody into thinking they have to put out tons of food to bump up there profits. There are masses of berries and seed wild every where at present that i am sure are more healthy for them, Look what happens to humans if they eat everything out of packets.
out of shape and out of sorts.
A pet subject but don't start me on squirrels.

Looks lovely...sure the birds will be back come a cold snap.

It all looks lovely,Lily, and I toyed with that idea too,as I have a similar feeding station..but my little devils still come all the time..about 10 in one Sparrow Family..and a few Bluetits..so I never got the chance..and this week I even saw the Robin having a go! very unusual ,given they are ground feeders..and plenty down there for it too..wished I had been ready prepared with the camera..

Many thanks to all for your interesting comments. :o)) I bought this feeder for the front garden but stuck it in the ground in the back to assemble it and decided I liked it there although the birds didn't agree!
I have a robin too Bloomer who thinks the feeder at the front is his and likes to see off other birds as long as there's only one or two at a time. He's not so brave when the sparrow family arrive. lol
From your comments it seems that many birds are discerning enough to desert our feeders and go for 'natural' food when it's available.
I'm sure they don't really need feeding in milder months Brian but it's interesting that advice from RSPB is to feed all year round.

That looks really lovely and what a good idea Lily.we would have to buy another one as where we live, we get alot of variety of birds who seem to keep on feeding all year round. We have had alot of babies this year again and they go on the table as well as the feeding station.Although we have hedges with berries and trees too they still all come and feed. The robin had a family this year as well.

Thats a good idea and they look brilliant:)

Gorgeous Lily, what a good idea, I've got a similar one in my front garden and had to stop feeding the birds as my neighbour had a new drive laid and a new car and he didn't want me encouraging the birds in case they poo pooed on it ! :0((
Am off now to buy two new baskets.

Hi Rose, how lucky you are to have them with you all year round and with babies too. With winter on the way, those of us not so lucky will all see them flocking back soon enough I expect :o)
Thank you Nana, I'm trying to keep them looking this good by putting them under cover when it rains - which is all the time just now! :o(
Well you might as well put it to good use Val being as you live next door to an old misery guts. It also gives you a chance to cram a yet more plants into that vast estate of yours! LOL

Lily. Interesting comment About RSPB because they used advocate food from feeders could choke the young when being fed by the parent ,and if we are talking Peanuts i can understand that as they take a lot of digesting .I know there are all sorts of food available, but the feeders I see the majority have peanuts in them.

6 Sep, 2011

I think it may have been referring to leaving peanuts lying around whole,Bjs,in the case of baby birds, but they can only peck little bits from feeders..

6 Sep, 2011

I'm not a member of RSPB Brian but I've seen them quoted as advising year round feeding in several mags. I believe they advise whole peanuts be fed only in wire mesh feeders because of young birds choking on them. The birds round here are far too fussy to eat peanuts anyway, they much prefer culinary delights such as sunflower hearts!

looks lovely lily and great idea, i havent had the same birds this year but im sure they will return come winter, in summer they have alot more choice of natures treats, berries etc.
i may do this with my old station as i have a new one on the patio now, thanx for showing this lily :o))

Hi Sandra, I'm glad you like my idea and yes you could certainly make use of your old one. It's quite a relief not having to keep filling the feeders up isn't it? Much better for them to eat naturally, lots of berries on the Rowan trees this year.

Genius idea, Lily! ... I saw a Bluetit checking out the birdbox in our back garden this morning ... just a shame the lovely Conifer behind it was felled last week ... it was in the garden behind ours so there is more light in my garden but certainly less birdsong ... :o(((

10 Sep, 2011

Glad you think so Shirley :o)) Do you think the blue tit had been made homeless by the felling of it's nice cosy conifer? We've had far less birds in our back garden since we had our big conifer hedge reduced in height as this made the top open and so affording far less protection for them. Sadly there's a price for everything it seems :o((

10 Sep, 2011

I am certain there was a Robin nesting within the Conifer, Lily ... not seen him/her since the tree went ... if the Plum tree is next to go from their garden we will have no privacy whatsoever and the birds will have nowhere to shelter .. :o(((

10 Sep, 2011

What a shame Shirley do you think the plum tree will be axed? I often wonder where the birds go when these things happen, I suppose they do find other places to nest and perch.

12 Sep, 2011

Well, the lady behind us is wheelchair bound ... her son told me the garden is being brick paved soon to give her better access around it ... the Plum tree is at the back of their garden (as was the Conifer) near two sheds ... if it DOES go then our view will be their bungalow windows ... :o((( ...
On a happier note though ... our neighbour John had a dead tree removed and I wondered where the Blackbird who loved to sing within the branches would go ... he simply moved further back to a TV aeriel! ... Where there's a will, there's a way ... lol! :o)

12 Sep, 2011

The poor birds must get an awful shock when they go to land in their favourite tree and find it GONE!
Hopefully your neighbour won't want to look at your house either?

14 Sep, 2011

Plum tree is still standing, Lily! :o)))
