OUCH!

Woken by a loud thump at 6am yesterday I knew exactly what it was…..yes that horrible noise of bird hitting glass. With our large picture windows it happens fairly often.

I quickly jumped out of bed but could find no stunned or dead bird, the only evidence was a clear imprint of the poor unfortunate Woodpigeon on the glass.

You can see imprint of one wing going straight upwards and there is also one going out to the left right to the edge of the photo about half way up but I couldn’t quite capture that one against the background. What a huge wingspan they have.

I was pleased it was able to fly off and that I had no poorly bird to attend to but I have heard that they often break their beaks like this and then die slowly being unable to feed. Very sad but I prefer to think that it survived OK.

Ouch indeed Lily, You are very caring to jump out of bed at that time of the morning for the poor little chap. I'm pleased you didn't find him though and, yes, I hope he's fine too.

We had a pigeon fly into our kitchen window last year and he sat there for about half an hour (I think) before flying off again. Holly and I could even stroke him. We gave him some broken up fat balls to eat when he pulled himself together.

I agree Lily you were brilliant to jump out of bed in the middle of the night. Glad it was apparently ok though.
We had a baby Goldfinch came into the conservatory last week. We could see it from the kitchen window, so just kept our eye on it. It calmed down and just sat quietly, so hubby armed with a drying-up cloth, very slowly crept up on it and was able to cover it with the cloth, but it was so light in weight he wasn't sure he had it and as he picked the cloth up it came out. He was very quick and got it in the cloth again and took it out and it joyfully flew off straight away. Sadly, there was a dead one on the ground earlier that morning and we hoped it wasn't the parent. The baby had fledged though, so could probably look after itself.

Pleased he is alright.

We had a pigeon fly into our kitchen two days ago and the silly thing flapped like mad against our kitchen window until it was exhausted. Now my predicament was how to get him out ! I got my broom and offered him the handle to climb on, whilst chatting in a very calm voice to him ! and he obliged and climbed on the handle, I then carried it to the door and as soon as he caught fresh air he flew off, silly things aren't they ? So glad yours was alright too Lily. :0))

This reminds me of the time I was checking on a house while the owners were away, the porch glass on one side, safety glass thank goodness, 'crinkled' into a thousand pieces, no sign of a bird or a stone thrown. The glazier reckoned it would have been a Pigeon and said 'happens all the time love, keeps me in business ! I do hope your bird didn't 'crinkle' his beak.

They're tough Lily ... I've no doubt he 'bounced' ! lol ;~)) x

I have similar ones on our bedroom window too. They have a dusty powder on them dont they.

Thanks for all your comments folks, it's interesting to hear all your 'birdy' tales, seems like we've all got one to tell. Friends with georgian or leaded windows don't seem to have this problem and double glazing is so reflective especially on large panes so I guess all they see is sky!
Ian and Mad, no way could I go back to sleep thinking of a poor bird lying stunned and at the mercy of the many cats round here just lately. :o((
Yes Sbg that dusty powder leaves a very defined image doesn't it. It looks like the eyes and beak are there too on this one, I do hope it's not! :o((

Ah, poor pidge, hope he's ok.
Its not the one that ate all the pies is it Lily ? lol

oh no poor thing i do hope it wasnt hurt lily, great pic though, can see it clearly, use to happen at school while we were in class, frightened us to death,

We've had collared dove imprints, the noise is sickening isn't it. We did have a blackbird once who had stunned himself, but after a night in a cardboard box in a spare bedroom, flew away unhurt:-)

OMG Lily! What a great pic! You can almost see the poor pidge's face! I'm sure he'll be fine ... bit of a headache maybe!

........hmmmm ...B8......a tough old bird eh....maybe a bit like yourself ???
LOL Val, if it had been Podge the Pidge then I think the glass would definitely have shattered!
I hope so too Sandra, the fact he flew straight off is a good sign I should think.
It certainly is a horrible noise BA. Last year I did a blog about a female blackbird who flew into the same open glass door 3 times and each time I put her (stunned) under the nearby Hosta and she recovered every time. Made sure I kept the cat in though!
Definitely a big headache Fluff, had a magpie did it once too although he wasn't so lucky. Instant death. :o(((

probably just left with a headache lily ;o(

Well I'll tell you a secret, folks - having had not only birds crashing into my windows and leaving these imprints, also one in the sitting room last year (at 6 am too) - but there is a solution, and one that pleases me enormously - DON'T clean the window! I've deliberately left mine this summer, although it is now beginning to drive me bonkers and I'm desperate to clean it, but I shall be resolute and not do it before September, when there's less risk of their crashing against it. And I've not had one incident of a bird crashing into it at all this spring or summer. Course, I can't see much out of the window...

Well Bamboo, my secret is that all the other windows in my house are far from clean (hubby refuses to pay a window cleaner saying he'll do it himself......say no more) but this one is huge, 3 panes and what you can see is only part of one. As it's in the front and very visible I feel I have to clean it now and then. Net curtains is another option - hides a multitiude of sins - or dirt! Being in a top floor flat I suppose you have no idea whether your casualties survive or not or did you trot all the way down in your nightie? LOL
Filthy windows are a bit like leaving off your specs aren't they - not long till Sept now.....

That's my excuse too Bamboo;-))

No, I do look to see if there's a casualty anywhere - funnily enough I did see a dead pigeon in the grounds today, and I wouldn't be surprised if he'd crashed into a window by the look of his injuries, but it wasn't anywhere near my flat. Of course, everyone else lets the window cleaner do their large balcony windows - I don't because of all the plants out there, too many in his way and too open to damage.

Don't blame you Bamboo.....never let a man near your potted plants......or any plants in my case! :o((
