My garden this beautiful morning

I spent all day yesterday working in the garden. It was just the right sort of day for working – pleasantly warm without being too sunny, a light breeze which didn’t affect sweeping up, and no rain all day. I was tired but happy when I went to bed last night, but expected that the weather wouldn’t be too good this morning, and deteriorating to heavy rain this afternoon. At least according to the forecast …

But when I got up this morning, the sun was cracking the flags! It’s absolutely gorgeous out there at the moment, so I quickly nipped out with my camera and took a few shots. Doesn’t it cheer you up to see a garden in the morning sunshine?

Three years ago, the grass went right up to the fence, with no border. When we had the old rickety fence replaced, I decided that I’d like to grow things alongside the new one, as although it’s a much stronger fence I didn’t think it was very attractive and wanted to soften it a bit. So we dug this border, and the shrubs, tree and conifers here are all doing quite well.

Earlier this year I’d planted some Erysimum Bowles Mauve in the gaps between the euonymous. They are one of my favourite plants and I was hoping they’d do well here. Unfortunately, this wall gets extremely dry, and I don’t think I was vigilant enough about watering. Although the plants were still flowering quite well, the foliage looked very dry and unattractive. Yesterday I decided to remove them and replace them with these pretty marguerites – two white ones and one red one in the middle gap. The million bells either side are doing quite well. I know it’s difficult to see the detail on this photo.

I hope the good weather continues this morning, because I’ve got some lovely new guinea busy lizzies to pot up. They were a bargain buy from my local farm shop, and I thought I’d use them to brighten up a couple of shady areas. Do we ever stop?! I must go and get ready … see you later!

Your garden looks neat and tidy and pretty :o)
Do birds use the bird box on your fence ?

Thank you for your kind comments! Terratoonie - that birdbox is actually a squirrel feeder! The round holes are the viewing holes so that the squirrel can see the nuts. My husband made it as he wasn't impressed with the ones we could buy. It has a nice big shelf for them to sit on. Don't hold out much hope of getting in the garden again today - or maybe not until this evening anyway. Have promised to take my ten-year-old to the park with her friend since the weather is so nice!

How long before your borders begin encrouching on the grass?! Wonderful.

Your garden looks lovely Jan. When the sun shines everything else goes out the window and you just have to get out there. Nice to see someone actually feeds the squirrels, we don't get them in this garden but would love it if we did. Do we ever stop changing things around? Not likely - that would be boring!

Well done hubby on his squirrel feeder... maybe he should patent the design and make a fortune... or take his invention on Dragons' Den ? Lol.

Your garden looks really nice.

You've worked hard out there! We haven't had any sun, but the rain held off until about 5-ish today, so I did get some things done.

Hi again everyone, thanks for your replies. Sadly I didn't get into the garden again today - took my daughter and her friend to the park instead, well someone's got to do it! We had a lovely time in the sun though, and came home to hubby's delicious beef casserole. I'd left him at home fitting a new garden gate, so how he managed to find the time to cook a casserole too is beyond me. Yum! As for the squirrel feeder and Dragons Den, yes, we've thought of that too! Until we added up the cost of constructing the thing, and the time it took him - we wouldn't make any profit I'm afraid!

What a lovely garden you have. I like marguerites too. They are easy to grow. I hope you can get some gardening done today if the weather holds for you.

Thank you Lincslass and Hywel - I did get out into the garden today, after dusting and hoovering the bedrooms, and then giving the bathroom a good clean, including bleaching the grouting in the shower ... I rebelled when it came to doing the ironing though! I potted up my busy lizzies and they look lovely and cheerful, can't wait for more flowers to bloom on them. My little girl helped me so that was a nice time together. She reckons that she'll enjoy doing her garden when she grows up!

You're teaching her the right way. :o) She'll grow up to appreciate nature.

Now I would have done the ironing and left the rest. lol. I find it relaxing.

Ooooh! Hywel! You can come and do my ironing any time! I hate doing it. :-(

Me next!

12 Jul, 2009

lol. I find it soooo relaxing - as I see all the creases disappear so I feel all the stress being smoothed out of my body :o)

12 Jul, 2009

Hywel - you are supposed to iron the clothes, not yourself! LOL.

Ouch!
