Hills and wild flowers (part two)

….. so we went further along the way to where there is an old chapel called Capel Maen (that means stone chapel)

and these wild strawberries were growing along the wall outside it.
Fragaria vaginiana

And there were lots of Red Clovers – Trifolium pratense – along the grass verges and in the grave yard :-

From the chapel there are views of the hills. They are in the Beacons National Park.

They are high and remote. I don’t like them :o(
I think they’re creepy and I never go up them …
I like to stay on the lower ground, where there’s plenty of company from the locals :o)

There were millions of Bluebells along the way -

Endymion non-scriptus
or Hyacinthoides non-scripta as they call it now :o(
But I have learnt the first name many years ago, and that’s what sticks in my mind.

The wild creeping speedwell was very blue aswell – Veronica persica

Pitty the colour of these Yellow Archangels – Lamium galeobdolon – hasn’t come out very well, but yellow never does on my camera :o(

Neither has the colour of these Dandelions – it’s a bit late for them aswell

(see the litter ?)

There was a nice view over the gate :) I felt like going for a walk in the field but I didn’t.

Now here’s a pretty wild flower called Ragged Robbin – Lychnis floss-cuculi – it grows in wet places.

Sorry it’s blurred but it was very windy, and my hand is unsteady aswell ……

And there were lots of big Ox eye daisies – Leucanthemum vulgare – in some places the verges were like one white block with them.

I love wild flowers. I think they look natural and unspoilt,

…… and they always seem to smile at me :o)

what a wonderful part two of your blog Hywel, your photos are beautiful, scenery quite stunning,

Love this walk Hywel, and the view through the grave yard, spectacular. Your photos are fab, yet again, I do enjoy your blogs.

Beautiful pictures, beautiful plants. It is a shame there are no gardening programmes on the telly to show all the 'wild' plants out there; I don't know them myself and I really must get a book when we go for walks. We are so out of touch with nature now, aren't we, I remember being fascinated by the flowers of bindweed, so delicate and papery, now it is just a menace! We must learn to appreciate any plant, and try to remember that fascination we had as a child, though my daughter now doesn't like going out into the garden unless she might miss something good on the Disney channel.....shame....

Oh, the lambs were looking sturdy - and tasty!!!:))

27 May, 2011

Beautiful photos Hywel. I love the wildflowers. They remind me of my childhood. Especially the bluebells. And the lovely lambs.

Proper welsh lambs, lovely - pictures are great again Hywel, thanks for the memories, when I was little we called the white daisies Moonpennies, I still call them that, they are all along the verges here too, loved your blog.

Smashing blog Hywel, I've been stuck indoors all day and this has been a breath of fresh air.
Much appreciated. :-))

27 May, 2011

Hywel....there aren't words....the wildflowers show nature at its best :)

I love the moonpennies (daisies) and I also remember the clover from childhood. We used to take off each little bit of the flower and suck the nectar out :) Lovely and sweet.

Feel like I've had an outing to the beautiful countryside now...thanks for the lovely photos.

lovely photos again Hywel - such great scenes to view - the lambs are so cute

27 May, 2011

lovely blog...my favourites are wild flowers, especially daisies, there is nothing to beat their simplistic beauty
their cheekiness and their, as you say, smiliness if their is such a word. Thank you Hywel you brightened my evening.
My daisy picture, do you call it an avatar, is a photo my son took especially for me.

27 May, 2011

Another lovely walk Hywel, I like to see the wild flowers, many of them are so dainty. Fabulous scenery Hywel and the lambs want to know what you think you`re doing.....

27 May, 2011

Hywel, you sure do have some beautiful walks around you......Thankyou for sharing this one with us....Lovely photos.........

27 May, 2011

Thanks for your comments. Like I said in the blog we didn't walk - it must have been a 20 mile round trip lol

I'm pleased it brought back some happy memories for many aswell :o))

Scotsgran I hope you can go to Swansea (if you like such places - I think it's a dreary dump lol)

Daisyco your avatar is lovely - nice and simple :)

Loved you part two blog as much as part one, maybe even more, beautiful photos ahhhh the lambs, so sweet, but it was the flowers that really did it, just beautiful

27 May, 2011

Thank you :)

Great photos Hywel ! Love Ragged Robin...had a cultivated version in the garden for years..but seeing your pics I realised it hasn't appeared this year :( It used to self seed everywhere too, so don't know if perhaps the severe winter
has finished it off or not.

28 May, 2011

Lovely blog, Hywel. Thank you.

28 May, 2011

A wonderful tour Hywel and love that ragged robin its a beauty, lovely views and how cute the lambs to think a building 137 years old looks better than most of the eye sores they build to day love that stone wall too and agree with you on the wild flowers looking better, and such array of colour too.

Around the maritime museum area where the sports centre is was very pleasant but I would not want to live there because the town seems to be built in to the side of a cliff. My son kept telling us to go west and inland a bit but OH always wanted to go straight home. We only ever had day visits. Swansea was one of the ports which my husband knew well when he was at sea. That is a long time ago when it was a busy port. Round where you live is like a completely different country.

Thanks for this enjoyable blog Hywel, you were close enuf to us to share a cuppa :) LOL Its strange seeing your neighbourhood in a pictorial, could have been me own lambs ;)

28 May, 2011

great blog Hywel, loved the flower pics & ooh those cute lambs..not too sure about the dandelions though lol. :o)

28 May, 2011

Thanks for all your comments about my blog :)

Judy pitty that hasn't come back. it's so pretty.

Sixpence I agree about the buildins of today - they're boring.

Scotsgran I live north-west of Swansea about 20 miles. I never go there. It's a dump.

Iagojames I didn't know you lived so near to me. It sounds like you have a farm.

Joanella. I like to see dandelions :) They are not pretty but I like to see them

28 May, 2011

Wonderful pictures Hywel - especially the lovely Brecon Beacons. I know they're not your favourite but we love them and have spent many lovely times climbing Cribyn, Pen-y-Fan and Fan-y-Big. It's a very special place. :o)

29 May, 2011

Thank you Nariz. These are the Carmarthenshire Vans, but they are part of the national park. The ones you mention are further east, and higher still. They give me the creeps lol :) Nice to know you have been there and liked it. I've never been up pen y fan. I tried to go once but it became foggy and we had to go back lol. I could never do it now - arthritis and agoraphobia :(

29 May, 2011

great blog, but I go a bit confused clicked on to this instead of the The National Botanic Garden of Wales - Introduction (part 2) but very enjoyable as I had missed this blog. :-)

29 May, 2011

:o))

29 May, 2011

Lovely blog and loved the photos, like you i love wild flowers, and love the photo of the sheep.

29 May, 2011

Hywel, I wonder how you got those wonderful shots of bluebells? I can never get the exposure right, and blue flowers never seem to come out the proper shade??

Scotsgran, you should try coming further west to the west coast of Pembrokeshire - stunning.

29 May, 2011

Thanks for your comments everyone :)

Steragram I don't know how the colour came out like that. It's just hit or miss really. I've only got a cheap camera - I point it and click it and that's that lol.
I crop the photos to get closeups. I can't hold the camera steady enough to take proper ones ........

30 May, 2011

Love the ox-eyed daisies Hywel. I grow the cultivated type, but they look great in the wild.

30 May, 2011

lovely blog Hywel...the wild flowers always put a smile on my face....i saw some the other day that just brought out the jealousy in me...near our local council tip in the hedgerow 'doing' for them selves....DELPHINIUMS.....no slug pellets..no staking....just 5 perfect blooms popping out above the stingys....

6 Jun, 2011

Thank you Steragram, I have not been past Swansea yet so will need to make a special effort to come to SW Wales and enjoy all there is in your part of the world. We get lots of Welsh visitors in Edinburgh for the rugby and I would love to go to a male voice choir concert.

10 Jun, 2011

Oh I hate male voice choirs :o( they remind me of death lol I don't know why, but they do ...

22 Mar, 2012

Just been enjoying this blog again and it struck me that the third pic of ragged robin looks like a watercolour painting.

23 Mar, 2012

Our son turned on Britain's Got Talent last night (I don't usually watch it) and there was a Welsh boys' choir of 100+ voices and they were wonderful. The sound of a Welsh choir almost never disappoints me....sorry they have a negative affect on you, Hywel.

The maximum age in this choir was 19 yrs. and they were all from "the valleys"....so good to see a group of young men enthusiasticly singing and being committed to a group activity.

25 Mar, 2012

It's good that youngsters take an interest in things I suppose, but I think a mixed choir sounds much better than a lot of men on their own :o)
