Corfu town

Just some pictures I took while walking around the old part of Corfu town.

NEW FORTRESS
The New Fortress is found on the hill of Agios Markos and it protected the city from the west side.

Wild flowers in playground number 1

Beautiful…always packed with people in the summer

Cycas, there are a lot of these planted in town

The Royal Palace and road through arch

Gorgeous arch (Royal palace)

Columns in front the palace.
(The Museum of Asian Art of Corfu is the only Asian museum of Greece and is housed in the Palace of Saint Michael and Saint Georges)

A nice clump of Strelitzia (planting mine in the garden this spring)

Aloe species

The old fortress, it was built on a man made island and has some stunning architecture. (my favorite)

Church of St. George inside the old Fortress

Fern on tree in The Liston…I can’t believe I didn’t take a picture of this. It’s one of the most popular places to visit on Corfu. It’s a stip of cafe’s on one side and tables under trees on the other… a must for anyone visiting Corfu. Always packed with people!!!

The old Fortress, side view taken from another playground (can anyone guess I had my little boy with me???)

Aloe flower

Entrance to the Old Fortress

Thanks , Alex , the town was very busy when we took a stroll around . Was this a Sunday perhaps ?
We had refreshments in the resturant by the cricket-pitch .
I liked Corfu very much .

Definitely Sunday and Siesta time!!! I had to wait a few times here and there for people to get out of the way. ;o)

You should have seen the roads two hours after these pictures...absolutely packed!!! Carnival season.

Thanks Sticki. I'm thinking about giving it a try on my palm trees.

It's a long time since we stayed on Corfu (40 years almost exactly) and I seem to remember sitting outside a hotel(?) drinking Coca Cola and watching a cricket match take place on the pitch opposite, right in the middle of the town. Did I imagine this or does it still happen?

Thanks Terra, Sanbaz, Paul and Lincslass. I'm glad you enjoyed the pictures and so happy to share them with you.

It still happens Gattina, mostly in the summer. A lot has changed and all for the better!

28 Feb, 2012

I have mixed memories of Corfu - It's where I discovered I was pregnant (and very sick) as was the daughter of the taverna where we were staying. We went back 7 years later and compared the relative outcomes. (mine was better. Well, prettier, anyway!)

28 Feb, 2012

You're funny. ;o)

Thanks Alex, for a lovely tour. I LOVE Corfu . . . had a couple of hols on the north-east coast (near The White House?), and took a boat trip across the bay to visit Corfu Town . . . then we got lost!

28 Feb, 2012

You're welcome Sheilabub. I like the north-east side...I don't go that way much but I do like it.
(The White House)...was it in Kalami?
lol...they should hand out maps of Corfu Town.

28 Feb, 2012

Yes . . . Kalami. Apparently the White House where Lawrence Durrell used to live can now be rented for a holiday. Bet it costs a small fortune!

We stayed in a little villa with a pool, and I remember masses of wild flowers, and very friendly restaurants - Poli Kala!!

28 Feb, 2012

That was interesting. I love to see historical places like that.

28 Feb, 2012

I wonder.....

Bravo, you kept up with your Greek. Poli kala. ;o)

29 Feb, 2012

Thanks Hywel. It's interesting for me too, because I wasn't raised here.....I'm learning as I go along.

29 Feb, 2012

Thank you for sharing your beautiful photographs, having never been to Greece, Corfu Town looks like a photographers paradise

29 Feb, 2012

You made me smile, Alex . . . "kept up with my Greek", lol. Apart from Kalimera, Kalispera etc., Poli kala is about all I remember! But when I said it to a restaurant owner he threw up his arms and yelled in delight - so it was well worth having a go. :))

29 Feb, 2012

You're welcome Johnboy68, I'm glad you enjoyed the pictures. I found out today that Corfu has gorgeous waterfalls. I think I'll be going hiking soon.

29 Feb, 2012

LOL.....he sounds like my father.
A few words are better than no words especially when you make others happy. ;o)))

29 Feb, 2012

Good saying of your father's. :))

I remember small Daughter being taught the phrase "Yasu nafta!" (hello sailor) and very happily tripping round the locals when we were on holiday there, practising it on all and sundry. She got rather a warm response from pretty much all of them, sailors or not.
I just got the basics under my belt - "Where's the bus stop?", "Where's the loo?" "Too expensive." "Hallo", "Goodbye", "Yes, no, please, and thankyou".
I've forgotten the lot, now.

I know what you mean Gattina. People love it when they speak English to my little boy (five and half now) and he answers in English. He only know the basics (for now).
Those are the kind of phrases I would want to know as well!

1 Mar, 2012

How sweet! I can just picture it!
I've always considered it terribly bad manners and very arrogant to visit a country without learning the basic courtesy phrases in the local language. I remember my father, when we went abroad, speaking English VERY loudly and slowly, and it embarrassed the Hell out of me. Why should anyone be expected to speak OUR language in THEIR country? Both daughter and I started learning smatterings of other languages when we visited anywhere as tourists, and it has now become her profession. Apart from anything else, it immediately (with the possible exception of parts of France) provokes smiles and helpfulness that you have made the effort.

1 Mar, 2012

I agree with every word Gattina. :)) It's also fun (well, I can only do this in French) to understand another conversation, say in the queue at the boulangerie, without the participants having a clue that you know exactly what they're saying!

1 Mar, 2012

We have the terrible habit of imagining that people here don't speak English at all, or well enough to understand our English conversations, and it's very embarrassing to find out that the lady in the next queue is English and you've been discussing her. LUCKILY, we were only saying nice things about her, and now we are the best of friends. It cured us, though.

1 Mar, 2012

I do the opposite Gattina, because I look so Italian, the touristy Brits and Americans don't realise I can understand every word they're saying when they're moaning about something over here or relating some fact that is totally wrong - I sometimes (not often) but in and put them right and they're SO shocked and embarassed!!

1 Mar, 2012

It's fun, isn't it?

1 Mar, 2012

thanks for sharing us your beautiful place , very sacred!
