I NEVER THOUGHT IT WOULD COME TO THIS...........

When the County Organizer for the N.G.S. came to give our garden the once over, she turned to me and said now NO MORE PLANTS…..OH beamed as he had been saying the very same thing for years….well a hundred plants later (yes seriously) and still buying 7 delightful daylilies only a few days ago, OH said you know what the CO said…. where on earth are they going?
The weather being good, we have spent several days in the garden, changing this, moving that, lifting, dividing, creating……AND I have come to the sad conclusion….we do have too many plants!! the garden cannot cope with any more, I have to stop and say less is more, and remember why we wanted to open the garden in the first place, one of the reasons being…most people these days have much smaller gardens and it was to show what can be achieved with a small space.
In Hampshire there are many beautiful gardens open to the public, most of them are enormous some running into several acres and whilst they are lovely to admire, young people cannot relate to them, and these are the people we want to inspire, the gardeners of the future
So it is with heavy heart my plant buying days are over, OH is delighted needless to say, think of all the money you will save he says.
Went to Morrisons tonight, did I look at the plants? no I did not.
Mind you saw this very pretty little Saxifrage online which I am sure would…………………Never say never!!!!!

Your up late Pip.......thanks for that.

It's 10 am over here in Australia :o)

Dotty....you've really had a ball repositioning, planting up and sorting out in your lovely garden....I'm not going to join in and say you'll NEVER buy another plant..or maybe I should say....MAYBE NEVER....cause I don't believe you can stick to that. lol How ever will you pass by the plant section in Morrison's as you scoot around getting groceries? You will have to be very determined!

Good luck! Maybe you will surprise us all and stick to your guns?

9 Oct, 2010

No more plants - lol :o))) I don't think you'll be able to stick to that one for very long.
I've said the same to myself about my own garden, but know I will not keep to it.
My OH (well she's a friend really but I call her my partner lol) is just as mad about plants as me, so I get no encouragement to keep to the straight and narrow. And I don't think I'd listen anyway lol
Anyway I hope your garden will be an inspiration to all who see it :o)

Oh what a familiar refrain! Im up to the point when I think..could squeeze an alstroemeria in there..but it spreads, mmmm.. another iris would go there..and it spreads..could tuck another heuchera there..it gets swallowed up by a large (it wasnt when I bought it) day lily..which has spread. I blame the plant labels - spread 12"?? Not on your nelly..double that!

9 Oct, 2010

Oh, and by the way, I am in a fair way to opening a garden centre.....my garden is fast becoming shelving stacked with overspreads!

9 Oct, 2010

Ive just had a marvellous thought..why dont we have GOY plant fairs..hire a field in each locality and sell our plants..when we have time of course...groan...

9 Oct, 2010

I'm sure no one would notice if you just squeezed in the odd little one every now and then DD! Mind you, you'll have to make sure OH isn't looking :o))
Do you know when your Open Day will be and what part of Hampshire are you in?

9 Oct, 2010

You could start to collect indoor plants!!!!

9 Oct, 2010

:(((((((

9 Oct, 2010

i was going to say the same as Linda..but im not an indoor plant person..i couldnt keep to a promise like that good luck .. lol :o))

9 Oct, 2010

Well DD....when the garden is full, the garden is full. Short of demolishing the house and using the space for more plants I think you're stuck. Mind you, have you thought of going up??? Climbing roses, honeysuckle, clematis....climbers and vines all over the place??? LOL

9 Oct, 2010

Oh, I 'do' understand, Dd. However, I don't think a garden is ever finished, so you will have opportunities of changing things when, for example, something gets too old and woody, or another plant spreads too far and looks unbalanced. It's a challenge! :-)))

We might even have another bad winter Dd , some plants might simply have to be replaced ... I like Gilli's idea of going up , you can get a lot of plants reaching for the sky.... .. :o)))

Whistonlass....Morrisons will be difficult because one has to pass the plants to shop....blinkers? Pip you naughty thing GOYing instead of work.
Hywel it will be very difficult....now if OH buys a plant or someone buys him one (birthday coming up) what can I do then?
TT you are so right it is not my fault the plants grow too large is it now?
Lily yes the dates are Sunday May 29th... and 26th and 27th June, also by private appointment. and we are in Lee on The Solent.
Gilli we have a pergola and 5 arches so have done the going up bit lol could live in a tent I suppose!!
Linda and Joanella not too keen on house plants, we do grow one or two, but the house has to keep all the windowsills free for the succulents to overwinter them.
Spritz spent the whole day in the jungle rearranging the plants and woweeee have found some space!!!
Amy have already belt and braced the garden just in case we have another bad winter.
Thanks for all you advice, I will let you know how I do, unfortunately OH and I have birthdays coming up......on dear!!!

Just as a recovering alcoholic has to go one day at a tiime without a drink, I guess a recovering plantaholic will have to do the same re plants. There is a way to get more plants in though - get A BIT ON THE SIDE!!! :)))

9 Oct, 2010

So - what would you like me to do with the white Malva moschata I've been growing on for you, then? Have you got a teeny-tiny space for it?

9 Oct, 2010

and I have some spare Euphorbia Polychrome, some day lilies, some heleniums and crocosmia...

9 Oct, 2010

Spritz it would be very rude of me to refuse it, wouldn't it? now stop it TT please. Andrew if only.........!!!!

9 Oct, 2010

You can never have too many plants etc in your garden , providing you have plenty of room why worry

11 Oct, 2010

OK, Dd. As soon as I'm happy that it's rooted well, I'll send it off. It looks happy and healthy, so I suspect it'll be quite soon. &:+}

11 Oct, 2010

Thanks Spritz, very kind of you........ Hijuju I don't have plenty of room that is the problem lol

11 Oct, 2010

15 Oct, 2010

Bellflower so pleased it made you laugh.
Cristina....my OH would notice he is as keen a gardener as I am.
Advice on open gardens the NGS are always looking for people to open for their charities, it involves a lot of hard work on your part, because the garden has to be worth visiting, the size is not an problem as long as there is plenty of interest, the garden is in good order, parking available, and no health and safety issues, and you can provide a good cup of tea and homemade cake!! if you need to know more go to their website which is most helpful, would you like to open yours?

15 Oct, 2010

Great blog DD think we all know the feeling, I found places today for 5 more of my plants in pots, but then thought I'd split my heleniums as they were going a bit bare in the middle, and ended up with 10 spare pieces!!!!!!!, god knows what I'll do when the 131 daylilies want splitting, could send some to you, lol.

18 Oct, 2010

Glad you liked it Simbad, 131 daylilies OMG cannot get my head around that one, I bet they look stunning all together.!!had to buy one plant today was half price and OH bought it lol

18 Oct, 2010

Thinking about it I can't get my head round it either, lol, they do look lovely when they're all in flower, the beds getting bigger and bigger, lol, soon be no grass left.
Thats the trick then DD get OH to buy the plants then he can't blame you :-)

18 Oct, 2010

You must post a picture of your field when most of the daylilies are in bloom, I know I thought that was the way to go (OH buying!!).
