Farewell

As we reach the end of the strangest year any of us can remember, things are far from ‘normal’ in the garden too.

While I’ve had an early variety of daffodil in flower before Christmas before now, I’ve never had two different types before, plus another in bud. And some of my hellebores have already started to bloom:

These are all hybrids, but even the species H. abruzzicus
has joined in

While H. croaticus is not far behind

I have also decided to take an open-ended break from GOY. The problems with access (I’ve had to use a different browser which is incredibly slow) and the increasing amounts of spam on the site have made it less enjoyable to use. I will leave my account, with all its photos and blogs intact for now, and you may see me return in the future if things improve.

But for now, I wish you all the best for the coming year, and hope everybody stays safe and well.

Keep in their Andrew, it will be sad to see you go, I don’t understand computers and all the tech stuff, but hopefully you, could get a better computer, I just use my phone and touch wood it’s going ok, but here’s hoping you come back and wish you all the best for the new year.

That’s a pity, Andrew. Don’t stay away too long! Keep safe and well, best wishes to you and your family in the coming year. Keep safe and well.

Andrew I have always enjoyed your blogs and am pleased you aren't closing your account, hopefully we will see more from you in the future, can understand your frustration though, it does drive one mad at times and yes it spoils things, it certainly has been a very strange and interesting year in the garden, winter didn't arrive here until last week, its been very much like last year, mild and very wet, it seemed to coincide with the shortest day and finished off my dahlias, chrysanths and sadly the roses but like me they do need a rest, lovely selection of hellebores you have, so many in flower..
Take care Andrew .. Best wishes for 2021....

Sorry to hear that Andrew. The list of new members is indeed mostly spam these days but they're easily ignored. Hope you soon return when you've had a break. Meanwhile happy new year, and stay safe!

Sorry you decided to leave Andrew, but I can understand. I find the spam extremely offensive especially as it lingers on this site long after it's been flagged several times. Some of it borders on pornography. I really hope those responsible for keeping this site are more diligent.

that is really odd I haven't had any bordering on pornography. The spam blogs are usually sort your gmail accounts or get some one to write your dissertation for you.

the ones I flag usually disappear within 24 hrs.

the adverts I get are usually linked to what ever I have been searching for. at the moment its furniture sales as I googled SCS company before my daughter took a temporary job with them.

The chap who tends to do the moderating has a full time job and does this as an aside so the fact he gets things deleted usually in 24 hrs is good in my book. I certainly couldn't do the techie thing.

I've enjoyed reading your blogs and looking at your photos, Andrew, and have learned a lot from you. Thank you. Sorry to see you go.
Happy New Year, may it bring you good things.

Andrew, I have enjoyed seeing your more rare and unusual plants growing in balmy Bracknell!

I do understand your reasons for taking a break and have been of the same mind myself as the amount of spam I have flagged these past months is ridiculous.

Adverts for female escorts, body treatments, I.T. companies and the like have become far too prevalent.

I do appreciate the moderator's work on this site, especially as it's all voluntarily done and wish them a very happy new year.

Andrew, enjoy your garden in 2021 and I look forward to seeing you once more when you feel ready to return.i

Yes it does Eileen. I've seen booties and boobies. Apparently you aren't the only one who missed it. It's plain as day. That's what I'm talking about.

Have to agree, I’ve seen the odd one or two myself.. the avatar is usually a photo of someone showing off some body parts like Paul mentioned.

1 Jan, 2021

I don't tend to look closely at avatars as on the tablet I use they are smaller than a postage stamp. I just read the blogs and flag as appropriate.

1 Jan, 2021

The ones I"m talking about aren't in the blogs, they are in the main photo gallery and not just a tiny postage stamp.

Sorry to see you go, you've always shown us such interesting plants in your garden. Hope you will pop in now and again. I can't say I've seen any offensive material, and I just ignore any adverts.

1 Jan, 2021

that explains it then Paul, I don't look at the photos that regularly and then usually only when I get a notification that a favourite has added some of theirs.

I sympathise Andrew. I can post but not see my pictures..and the problem is with the site... not my browser or my settings... I've been awol since last summer. trying to find out if I can download all my photos... don't want to lose my blogs but it looks like an impossible dream. for now, I'm hoping for a miracle. maybe tomorrow I'll sign in and they will all be back?
Be well and stay healthy... hope to see you back here in the not too distant future.

I wasn't pointing at you Eileen

Happy New Year Andrew! Stay safe !

2 Jan, 2021

I look at the photos regularly and haven't seen any offensive ones on there- wonder if its because of my ad blocker? There is the occasional one from "new members" but they are few and far between.

2 Jan, 2021

I didn't think you were Paul. I suspect the time differences between the UK and the USA means some images stay on longer for you than for us.

2 Jan, 2021

I don't know

2 Jan, 2021

That is such a shame, but thank you for everything you have put on here and for showing us your very special garden.
It would be so lovely to see you return one day so don't forget about us please.

3 Jan, 2021

I too have been off the site for some time, not because of adverts or pictures, but because my browser wouldn't show the pictures of the gardens at all. So I had to remember to change, or open, another browser to look at GOY. Of course it never happened, so it's taken this long to get back on here.
Have a break, remember us all and come back refreshed.
