1 Feb, 2012

Sticki ..
I have heaps of ideas... but these days can only work as fast as my eyes will allow ! ;o(

Yorks... if you see my updated blog, there are lots of us in gorilla costumes now... We're going to wear them all week because of the snow forecast..... ;o)

1 Feb, 2012

usually i have ideas but they just wouldnt work this time!!

1 Feb, 2012

I'll start work on a quiz.
Hardest part is persuading members not to put their answers in the comments under the puzzle... Lol.

1 Feb, 2012

part of the rules? you lose a point if you answer on the blog??!!!

1 Feb, 2012

sounds like a good idea :-)

1 Feb, 2012

If you answer on the blog, it spoils the fun for everyone else to see the answers . Lol.

How about .. if you answer on the blog, you have to wear a gorilla suit all year ... ;o)

1 Feb, 2012

that should be enough to make the point!!

1 Feb, 2012

Lol Terra, and a pic to prove they wore it...

1 Feb, 2012

Lol. Surreylad.

I've made a quick quiz..

would you like me to publish it now ?

If members like it, I'll make a more complicated one for when we are all snowed in ;o)

1 Feb, 2012

That's interesting . . . I've also had it in mind to do a quiz, but haven't yet had the time. It wouldn't be very difficult! I was thinking of putting up various pictures from my collection, and asking "What Month Is This?" because it has been such a funny year . . . but now I realise that it wouldn't in fact be very entertaining!

Back to the drawing board . . .

1 Feb, 2012

Oooh ... A quizz :o)

1 Feb, 2012

Sheila ... my eyes were rather tired when I made my quiz...
which I'll publish soon, so if you see any errors please let me know... thanks !

by the way... what month is this ? ;o)

Yes, Hywel ... a garden quiz ..
not in Welsh though... Lol...

1 Feb, 2012

Sticki do you remember the craze in the 1970's for 'herman-the-german friendship cake....he,s doing the rounds again!

3 Feb, 2012

now its funny you should say that pam, i dont recognise the herman the german bit but i do remember the friendship cakes ~ around the 80s i think.

they are very yeasty and you have to add something to take away that taste??

anyway last week my sister was given one ~ she is in buckinghamshire so its obviously going round there!!

3 Feb, 2012

is this where the neighbour gives you some of their mixture and it takes like seven days to make, then you pass it on to others,

3 Feb, 2012

thats the one I am on about Sticki, my firend gave it to me and it tasted awful

3 Feb, 2012

thats the one, i didnt like it either but my sister, who is a better cook than i am said it tasted nice.

3 Feb, 2012

i vaguely remember that adding chopped pineapple worked quite well

3 Feb, 2012

tasted like yeast to me, don't know what the Herman one is Pam is talking about,

3 Feb, 2012

I like a decent cake Sticki

3 Feb, 2012

maybe that was a better one ~ what does herman taste like?

3 Feb, 2012

so do i yorkshire

3 Feb, 2012

don't know, I have never eaten a herman, Hey Pam you there, Sticki and me want to know what a Herman tastes like,

3 Feb, 2012

please can you describe it for us?

3 Feb, 2012

Herman(my new pet) is a natural yeast starter, you stir and feed him for 10days, then divide him up, one for him,. One to keep, two to give away.
A cup of starter, then flour sugar eggs grated apple dried fruit spices& then baked,we really liked it, this week I used bananas and choc chips & raisind, it sunk abit and was crunchy & gooey at the same time ooh I forgot you dot the top with butter & brownsugar before you bake it....not yeasty at all.
Havn,t got time now but I,ll add my trials and tribulations with trying to turn Herman into sourdough bread... the first efforts resembled patio slabs....or lead baloons.....to be continued tomorrow...

3 Feb, 2012

will look forward to that, thanks pam

i think the butter and brown sugar wasnt there before, sounds rather nice.

comfort food?

3 Feb, 2012

MMmmmmm........oreish and keeps well......

3 Feb, 2012

Hi Pam ...

you may recall I described your first "Super Herman" efforts as being suitable for snow-boarding ..

... but you've improved amazingly since then :o) x

3 Feb, 2012

this is the same recipe my friend gave, sorry Pam I did not like it.

4 Feb, 2012

I think I should have saved the snowboard looking out of the window Terra.....
ah well Yorkshire wouldn,t do for us all to be the same!
Hows the snow up there with you?

4 Feb, 2012

Hi Pam... I think you've missed quiz. no.2.
Message on quiz no. 1. Lol.

4 Feb, 2012

Back now I,ve finished Terra,s quizzes and dug myself out of the snow....wish the fog would clear its raining as well!

Where did I get to....well now no-one wants poor herman si I wondered if the starter could be used as a sourdough starter so armed wit a recipe I put the ingredients on dough in the breadmaker...all ok if looking rather flat and undoughlike...
I knocked it back and put it to prove on the baking sheet....well it didn,t actually rise. Sort of went sideways... thought it may improve with baking....the recip says to spray the top 3 times in the first 5 minutes for the crust...ok...each time I sprayed it it seemed a little bit flatter....ok...when I took it out it had filled the baking sheet and brown...left it to cool,OH came to see(he loves fresh bread) and picked up the breadknife and began to saw, tried another knife....managet to chop a lump off which landed on the plate with a thunk....actually the inside wasn,t too bad but was less than an inch thick with the outside looking like a textured patio slab and the inside an old bath sponge.....well I blamed herman and 'never say die' made a proper sourdough starter from just flour & water left in the kitchen to attract any wild yeast that happens to pass by....after a week...what did Terra call it? Oh yes a supersnow board....wellit grew and grew as it should but stillfilled the tray Well, I said,Thats It!.......but that night on tv the Baker Brothers making sourdough bread, their starter is 50 yes 50 years old!! what they did was to prove it in a loaf tin shape then very quickly turned it on to a baking stone (not having such a thing to hand I used a hot baking sheet)...it still tried to spread so I roughly pushed it back and wedged the loaf tin against the side...
\0/ \0/ success!! edible loaflooking sourdough bread

next day I went to a Ladies Luncheon, I didn,t know the lady I sat next to during the meal mentioned being given a starter, Oh Herman she said!!, so watch out.? He may be heading your way.....

6 Feb, 2012

your story made me smile pam!!!
