Just a Warning

I keep getting emails from Santander saying that my credit card/debit card failed on my last transaction and they are asking me to give my pin number and credit card number so the sale can be authorized. I don’t even have a card to do with Santander, please be careful if you get one of these emails.

They will try anything won't they. I keep getting ones from different banks asking for my details. Luckily, I don't bank with any of the ones that come through, so I know they are scams.

The latest one I've got is an e-mail from American airlines to say my holiday is all booked (I can't remember the destination, but it would never have been a place I would have wanted to visit) and to click on the download button to retrieve my airline ticket. Even though I know I haven't booked this holiday I had a strong urge to click the download button to see what it would do, but instead I just deleted it. Not sure if this one would have put a virus on my computer or given them my details, but I didn't find out either way!

I agree with you that they will try anything, its such a worry though, I have just been deleting them I was afraid to download it as not knowing what could happen. that is shocking what you say about airline tickets, I am sure I have heard someone else mention the same as you.

thanks for the warning, they are scams all of them, they are just trying to get our details best to just delete them not to open them even, just get rid of them. Banks do not send e.mails asking for your details ever.

I,m wary of phone conversations too.
Trust none of them and download nothing that you don't recognise

Thanks Yorkie xxx

We had one of those calls from 'Microsoft' about a 'problem' with my computer, OH said I was out and they said well where is she, give me her mobile no.
The cheek of it, he was furious. This is a scam I have heard of before.

Contact Matt Allwright's team on BBC.co.uk/' you've been scammed' and follow the links to where you can get further advice and guidance.
It should be ok if you are going through this BBC website.

Hi all - just to agree with what Oliveoil says above, I work in IT and the advice I always give people is if you get an email from ANY bank, delete it immediately. Your own bank will never email you about anything but offers or promotions. No bank will ever email you about your account. Also, never reply to an email you think is suspect, even just to shout at them! All you succeed in doing is proving that your email address is a valid one.

Oh B. you could open a B & B, Lol!! Some crazy folk around isn't there? Thanks for the warning Yorks. Think I would be tempted to give a fake pin. no. but I know it is wrong to even comunicate with these people, they must be desperate.

The calls that really annoy me are the ones that start by saying their name, the stupid people use english names forgetting we can tell by their accents that they are lying and no way would they be called whatever monica they are using, I told a chap the other day that my name was Mustapha and that I hadn't got a flipping computer, they also ring off if you offer to sell them something.
Thanks for the warning Yorkie........

I've had so many of these, but none from the bank I actually use! I used to Google for the poroper bank, find their "phish reporting" page and forward the email to them. At the end, I had more "phish reporting" addresses in my contacts than I had friends and family - even some claiming to be from an Australian bank.

I don't report so many now, for that reason, but still forward the ones for which I do have accounts - and I'm amazed that the Inlad Revenue would feel the need to specify "GBP" when telling me to claim my refund!

If I may add to your warning - NEVER open any attachment in an unexpected email from an uknown source.

Also, it's not a good idea to have your full name as your email address - time was, when I got an email addressed to my full name, I knew it was genuine - until some online company that I'd registered with sold thedetails!

A good idea too is to add these e.mails to your JUNK folder(never open them first) and then they will always be filtered. :)

6 Jul, 2013

I have so many filters set, mostly for "unddisclosed recipient", with three variations on spelling. Also have filters for "viagra" and "lottery" - I check the spam before I delete, in case there are any that from my bank, Amazon, eBay, PayPal etc, that I forward to the proper people.

Yahoo has "disposable emails" - you can make up email addresses that will feed into your usual account, and, if they get spammed, you can delete them and get another. Don't know if any other email provider does this. But at least I can tell which website sold on my details, by which address the phishers use.
