Propagating Sedums

Last month, for whatever reason, I thought I would try increasing my Sedum plants as I grow a few plants to help a local charity to raise funds.

I read up on the various methods possible, mainly from a Carol Klein book I have, and chose to do both leaf and stem cuttings.

These were started off on July 20th and I resisted the temptation to take a peek to see if they were rooting. That wasn’t easy!

These are all Sedum ‘Autumn Charm’, originally from a little cutting gifted by GoY member, Scottish, back in 2014 .

On August 12th, twenty three days later, half of the leaves had rooted, enough for me to feel quite chuffed at my first attempt.

Here they are, potted up ready to grow on. Apparently little stems will grow and eventually the original leaf will fade away. Well, time will tell!

The pot of stem cuttings have all rooted too, meaning they can be potted on individually tomorrow.

Now that I have had success with these, I have taken leaf cuttings of Sedum ‘Matrona’ in the hope that they too will root. They have smokey blue green leaves and purple stems, grow to about 50cm (19") high.

There are some stems in a glass of water, but they are so very slow at growing roots that I shall forego that method again.

I would love to know what other members propagate, both the easy and the difficult ones!

Well done Shirley, It's good to try different methods.I was never successful with trying to root in water, and I haven't tried leaf cuttings, but stem cuttings are my preferred way..

If Sedum 'Purple Emperor' grows as big as mine, they will almost need a border of their own..they are huge this year ! Lol.

Thanks Siris, it keeps me out of trouble!

Julia, I hope so too ... :o)

Sandra, you probably remember the S. Purple Emperor originally came from Carole, a long time ago. I agree with you, they can grow soooo big.

How very worthwhile your process of propagating sedums is and you have quite a little cottage industry going there!! Thank you for showing us and explaining it to us. I feel sure you will have a lot of success with it.

Sandra, I think there are plants from GoY folk all over the U.K.!!

Thanks you Klahanie, my OH now wonders what else I may want to propagate and thinks plants will be stripped for cuttings soon. Then again, he knows very little about gardening at all!

Snap! After watching Beechgrove gardening programme where a lady showed how to propagate, I did some and have now got some small shoots coming from the leaves! Not all of them took however as the snails had a munch…. Will post a photo on my photos for you to see.

Ams, well done with your Sedum leaf cuttings. I just commented on your photo of them. I must admit I haven't watched Beechgrove for many years and shall have to look out for it.

That was very interesting, Shirley!

Thanks David, as it's the first time I have tried leaf cuttings I am feeling pleased as Punch!! Now, let's think what other plants I could try this method with ... :o)

Well done Shirley !
I haven't propagated anything this year, I'm trying to get the garden organised first (unsuccessfully !)

Hywel, they are still alive but not showing much growth so far. As to your garden, take it one day at a time, you'll get there eventually ... :o))
