Mint Moth

Whilst sitting in the garden this afternoon I was pleased to see so many insects flying around the plants, many Bees and Hoverflies, White Cabbage Butterflies, one Small Blue Butterfly, one Peacock Butterfly and a tiny Mint Moth.

The mint moth is a day-flying moth, which can be seen on sunny days between April and September (though is sometimes recorded in March and October). As the name suggests, caterpillars of the mint moth feed on plants in the mint family, including spearmint, catmint, marjoram and thyme. Mint moths are a common sight in gardens where these herbs have been planted, as well as in grasslands and wetlands where the foodplants are found.

As well as seeing them flying on sunny days, you may spot mint moths resting during the day on the leaves of their foodplants. They also fly at night and are attracted to lights.

I have a pot of Apple Mint near to the back door, Catmint sprawls in a border and over a path in the back garden and there is a low growing Thyme in the front gravel garden, all of which must prove irresistible to the Mint Moth!

I managed to photograph it on a Bowles’s Mauve plant … this gives an idea of how small the Moth is. It has a wingspan of 15-18mm.

It then liked the look of a Sedum or two …

I followed it across to a Teucrium but the photo is fuzzy as it decided to move as I clicked the camera … it had posed so nicely before!

Today has been a warmer, sunnier day than yesterday when it was so chilly!

I hope you have all enjoyed the sun too.

Well captured Shirley. Itโ€™s great to see moths in the daytime, isnโ€™t it! Thank you for sharing โ€ฆ ๐Ÿ™‚.

Lovely blog, Shirley! I had no idea that such a moth even existed as I've never heard of it before. Years ago I had some mint plants on the balcony but I don't ever recall having seen any kind of butterfly or moth on them. Perhaps they don't live in this part of the UK?

There were lots flying yesterday when I went to the Breezy Knees gardens.
They are widespread throughout the UK. There are a lot of day time flying moths.

Managed to get out in the garden for 6 hrs today. I ache now!

I often wondered what they were - so titchy! Thanks for naming them, Shirley.

Interesting blog Shirley - I love butterflies and moths I could watch them for hours in the garden but a very difficult subject - to catch a decent snapshot

Thanks everyone for your comments ... I have seen these Moths in the garden over the years so, as SGB rightly says, they are widespread across the UK. The White ones always seem so frantic, rarely settling on a flower for long, so not a hope of capturing them on film!

I have seen this moth occasionally on my Catmint. Nice blog, Ty.

Thanks Shirley, lovely blog and I'm pleased to know what it is. Tiny pretty little moth and like you I've a number of mints. At the moment it's favouring Mint after eight and who wouldn't!

Josie, thanks for looking in ... :o)

Janey, I was so lucky to have seen it flying around. By the way, is the Applemint still thriving for you? Mine seemed to stop, but is now really growing again, phew!

Janey, last evening I gave up on the site as 'Bad Gateway' kept on appearing. All back to normal today, hooray!

I am so pleased the Applemint is still alive with you ... :o)

David, that's a shame, I hope it didn't last too long.

On 2 days, Saturday & this morning, we have also had problems with out IP. At one point we were told it was the fault of our router & a engineer would be along on Tuesday - that was on Saturday morning. Contemplating at least 3 days without Internet made us feel "lost" . Fortunately his visit was cancelled as it was later identified as a "network issue". It went off sometime after midnight on Friday & wasn't restored until about 11 hours later. We don't know what time it went down today only that at 6am we had no Internet! We had to use mobile data on our phones - my wife purchased a 1GB top up on Saturday morning before the problem was identified. Now we worry that it will happen again!

Just goes to show how dependant we now are on the Internet! It's like TV when I was boy, if the TV broke down we didn't know what to with ourselves till it was fixed!

David, I still don't have a smartphone, just a basic Pay as you go ancient mobile which simply allows me to text and call. I am under pressure from son and daughter to 'join this century' and get a smartphone ... :o))

Nor me Shirley โ€ฆ Iโ€™m resisting the pressure!

Sheila, we have noticed whenever we are out for a coffee or a lunch, the first thing folk do when seated is get their mobile phones out! Is it this thing called FOMO, fear of missing out? Personally I like to look around at my surroundings ... :o)

My "smart phone" is used more for the camera function than anything else! I make very few calls & get even less! I do use the WhatsApp to keep in touch with our Spanish family as well as our son & granddaughter who still live out there. Even than I hardly ever use the free phone that comes with it & still less the video function. Everything is supposed to be encrypted so that not even WhatsApp itself can read or listen to anything.

One app I use almost as often as the camera is the Met Office app. Then it's a lot easier to read emails on the phone - not that I hardly ever get personalised ones, they are generally sites I've signed up, like GoY or the other 2 gardening forums I post on. It's like having your computer in your pocket! ๐Ÿ˜† So I use for just about anything except as a phone! ๐Ÿ˜†

If I get my phone out in public it's most often to take pictures rather than consult anything.
