Sick Pampas Grass

Hi Fralex, I also have a Pampas Grass and the same happened to mine after a bad winter. All I did was removed all the dead leaves (wear gloves though - it can cut you) and it sprang back to life with more flowers than the previous year. Good luck!

I use a small rake and with long gloves and a long-sleeved top on, I attack mine! It does make a mess everywhere, but the plant recovers well. I also try to feed it when I've cleaned it out each year...blood, fish and bone around the root area.

Thanks for the advice - I guess the best time to clear it now will be next spring?

I would be inclined to clean it out now before it gets too big. What do you say Spitz?

I'd do it now too Telme8, though I'm not Spritz! It shouldn't be left any longer Fralex. It's a nasty job, but someone's gotta do it..

Yes, I'd be inclined to agree the sooner the better really. My concern would be that if left over another winter it could rot away, as it seems to have started to turn black already.

P.S. Before the County Organisers came to assess my garden last July, I was to be found knee-deep in dead Pampas grass as I hadn't dealt with it! LOL. It is all the better for it, this year (and I did remember to comb it out earlier this year!)

I'm told by an Australian friend that she uses the flamethrower on hers at the start of the growing season! Seems a bit extreme and risky to me
