Bark damage

Asked on 3 May, 2008

Last year my newly planted weeping cherry became the devise of choice for bucks to remove the "fur" from the antlers. There is a 18" area all the way around that is damaged. I covered it during the winter, but fear I will lose the tree. It did bloom and is leafed out. Is there a product that I can apply that would help it to heal?

If they have totally removed the bark and damaged the green layer underneath the bark your tree is "girdled" and will probably die if you leave it as it is..If it is growing and leafed out perhaps you will be lucky. see if you can find a graft specialist at a nearby nursery or agric. college and discuss the damage with them. helps to have a picture to send them too if you can arrange it. see if it can be saved by grafting. Good Luck.
