Looking to paint leylandi tree trunks without damaging trees

We have bare trunks along the back of the garden. We get some privacy so don't wish to kill neighbours trees. Want to paint them bright colours to make a feature without killing the trees. What paint can we use? There is plenty of top foliage and they are very green on other side.

I don't think you can paint live trees... why is there no growth on your side - did you cut it all back?
