Can I plant two magnolias within a metre of each other?

United Kingdom Gb

I have dug a bed 3m diameter in the middle of my lawn - I have planted a lil. nigra - and have a black tulip magnolia too - could they grow together?

I wouldn't think so Smithden. Magnolia's will be huge trees and otherwise they only will choke each other and become a mess. They are wonderful trees, give them space and you will be rewarded. Your lawn underneath won't grow, but I see you have lillies. Keep in mind that you will get leaves falling, first of the blossom, then of the leaves and if you want to rake them, you will not want plants underneath. A small bench would be better I think.
