Veggies during the winter
Veggies during the winter
Asked on 22 Jun, 2007
I have three 6 x 3 ft veggie beds - when the summer toms, lettuces etc have finished what can I start to grow now to last into the winter - I do not have a heated greenhouse and would I need to cover the plants - any ideas?

Just remembered another, broad beans aquadulce can be planted in autumn, they
will crop earlier next year than spring planted.

Hi Genuisscuffy,
A few suggestions....
Winter lettuce - arctic king/ /all the year round, sow august.
Spinach - giant winter, sow aug/sept.
Spring cabbage, sow July/august.
Onions and garlic can be planted autumn, and will have a head start when the soil warms in spring.
You could try new potatoes for Xmas, get seed pots in august plant bottom of a tub and keep earthing up, till they reach the top.
Leeks are a good winter veg, but they need a long growing season, probably a bit late
for large ones but you might get some fine baby keeks. If you grow early carrots, try
interplanting the leeks next year, you'll be cropping the carrots before the leeks get too big., they helpdeter each others pests.
Hope you find this helpful,
