sambucus nigra

When should I prune my Sambucus Nigra ? And how much ? It seems to grow a lot out on the sides instead of up, I would like it to grow upwards instead put as it is so beautiful I dont want to kill it.
Thanks for any ideas (to a fairly new garderner )

Hi You can increase its upward growth by reducing the side growth. These are very tough trees and I think you still have time to prune some side growths before Winter sheds its leaves. I was told never to kill an Elderberry as there is a Witch who lives with it, Look after it and she will look after you. Rubbish of course , but that is the story.

Prune as hard as you like and then some in November. You'll see what I mean in the following summer!

It can be hard pruned in the spring, but other members (including me!) with this shrub tend to shape it in the autumn. This does seem to work!
