A customer is worried that her neigbour's elder is going to knock her wall down, she insists that elder roots are a special problem, as opposed to other trees. Is this true?

Not so far as I'm aware - they're no worse than any other broadleaved tree which gets 25 feet or more - none of them should be planted too close to any brick structure.
