I suspect that this is Tropaeolum speciosum! I've just succeeded in getting it going in my garden. :-)))

Unfortunately, not that many garden centres seem to stock it. We do and have done for many years if you happen to be passing through Northumberland any time?

If it likes your garden.....it will rampage through.........if it doesn't...it wont.....I've compromised and planted it in a pot...and its doing ok........in Northumberland...lol

By the way....its not strictly evergreen.....it does die back to nothing in the winter.......well it does here.....,

Yes, they do pretty much die right back though sometimes when a really thick underground rhizome has enough vigour, it sends up a particularly luxurious stem which I have know to persist right through. It takes a few years in the ground and probably with overhead shrub protection for this to happen though.

I had trouble getting it to thrive - it took 3 years before I got any flowers on mine. It pops up in unexpected places now - not where I planted it! It does indeed die back in the winter, even in this mild area. It was worth persevering, though. :-)))

My friend has the 'Flame Flower' growing well - it apparently enjoys a slightly acidic soil, with it's roots in the shade and kept cosy with a good mulch in the winter.

My soil is neutral, and when I read about its liking for acidic conditions, I wondered if that was why it didn't get going here...However, it eventually did, so I'm really pleased. :-))))
