why has it died

Was it newly-planted or an old plant? Also, was it a French Lavender or an English variety?

I had heaps of lavender, don't know which kind, but they spread from seeds everywhere. At the end of the summer they all died naturally. Here I was hoping I would have got rid of them, as they were growing like weeds, but no, the roots must have been alive in the ground, up they came again. I just left them, as the cows loved them too, lol. The bees came, they loved them too. But I had pulled them out in the garden, as they became wild!

An answer could be not enough water in the dry spell we've had.
