I want to dig up and replant my 12 foot conifer. Will it ok ?

Well good luck with that! No, seriously, you'll probably need some heavy lifting machinery, like a small crane, to lift out the size of rootball (wrapped in tarpaulin) you'll need to keep it alive.

I would look to doing this quickly, whilst the ground is still damp, or leaving it until autumn. And, like Bamboo, offer the sentiment "Good Luck" with it.

Oh lord... good luck! Not something I would want to try to do!

Conifers usually have a tap root. I would think if you cut that you will affect the stability of the tree when you move it. Can we ask why you would want to move it instead of just getting rid of it. The roots go out nearer the surface as well and go at least as far as the tree branches spread out. I think you will kill it trying to move it. I would recommend asking a tree surgeon for advice and then decide whether or not to do it. Your local authority will have a tree man who can advise you.
