What is the best way to propagate a Ficus tree? I inherited my father's tree after his death. It looks a bit thin and I heard you can grow more by cutting the limbs. What is the best way?

Which Ficus? There are over 50 varieties, most of which are houseplants...

I think this is Ficus benjamina. I've never tried propagating one of these, so can't really advise. I'd guess that heel cuttings would be the way forward - that is, you pull off a healthy side shoot (about 10cm or so long) so that a little bit of the main stem comes away with it - a heel. Nip out the growing point, nip off the leaves lowest down on the cutting and insert into well drained (gritty) compost. You shoudl have a few cuttings with just 2 or 3 leaves a peice. Seal into a plastic bag to keep the humidity in. Place somewhere where it will get some diffuse light, but NOT direct sunlight. A little warmth from underneath might help. This is a basic cutting method, but this plant might well require a different method. No harm experimenting tho!

My book says you can air layer this one on a woody section of stem, so you could try that. I think though, that you might be asking if you can prune this back to induce bushier growth - you can certainly reduce it a bit, but beware - this one drips white sap for a good while after its been cut, so you might need to put something down on the floor to catch any drips that occur. I agree it is Ficus benjamina - it likes good light, but not direct sunlight in summer, loathes and detests draughts and temperature fluctuation.
