Hibiscus do not need a lot of pruning. Any cutting on mine I do in early spring while the stems are still bare so I can see what I'm doing. I trim away any small growth near the base and any shoots growing into the middle of the bush. If I need to reduce the spread, I cut a branch out completely rather than just trim it back. Hope this helps
