Read the labels on Cuprinol products etc. They tell you which are suitable. You may need to soak the wood for a few days (on end in a bucket) or buy pressure treated wood. It won't hurt the plants as long as it is a suitable product.

if you can get old used rail way sleepers for the bit the that holds the soil as its got so much oil in it it wont rot as quick as many wooden products.if you want to sit on the edge you will need to put either a new sleeper at the top above the soil or some wood of the equal width as they are very oily and dirty.i would use cement blocks myself as you can lay them on there side with no cement over lapping and they will never rot and you can sit on the top while you toil away.

I thought old railway sleepers were banned from sale because of the creosote content?

ow they could be drc726 if thats the case you could get scaffold bords and shutter them, use a plant friendly preservative and i would line the inside with polythene.

a chap by me has just made a raised bed , and it looks well it looks like the way some people put the bricks on end to look nice but it is ideal for slugs and snailes,, this is diferent it is one peace about half dozen brick longe but being one pice there is no were for the slugs so you only need a little morter to do the whole bed and it looks well I do not know were he got them from I should imadgon a garden center and I dont know how much but if anyone is intrested I will ask him.

I'd be inclined to buy pressure treated, (tanalized) wood to start with.
