winter onions

I am going to try winter onions for the first time, any advice would be most welcome. Thank you

I guess you mean Japanese onion sets. They are very easy, planted in September or October, and you can harvest them in June next year. The only trouble is they don't keep as well as main crop onions.
Have you tried growing some of the perpetual onions, like Egyptian or Welsh onions. We have a bunching onion that keeps on producing usable shoots year after year.
