Why does my Lonicera periclymenum seem to be dying?
Asked on 28 Jul, 2008 0 replies
My Lonicera is in its first year, growing in a pot with a cane pyramid in partial shade. After producing fragrant blossom earlier, it has now stopped blooming, and some of the leaves are turning brown and shrivelling and some of the fruit have blackened. What do I do?

'Serotina' - we have had this since 2004 and it has yet to flower. It has always put on plenty of growth but was previously in a container and had to be trimmed to bring with us to this garden. 2007 was the first of it being in the ground and we can leave it undisturbed for 2008. It is now growing through some Hazel and Hawthorn.

L. periclymenum 'Serotina': the late Dutch honeysuckle starts flowering in mid-June, producing creamy white blooms with reddish streaks. If the roots are in the shade and it survives aphid attacks, it will continue until the first frost.
The RHS has given 'Serotina' its AGM.
Planting associations
A good mix for cottage gardens is Rosa 'Albertine' with L. periclymenum 'Serotina'.
Climbing honeysuckles also make fine companions with clematis, early-flowering chaenomeles and sprawling low-growing plants.
Position:
any normal garden soil
full sun or partial shade ( shade roots)
Flowers:
May - Sept/first frost
highly fragrant
Height: 2.5m
Spread: 2m in 5 years
Late Dutch Honeysuckle
I bought this plant to cover a gap at the back of my garden
Climber to over twenty feet. Will grow in sun or part shade but is more prone to aphids in sun
