Why has my 2 year old yellow/white Lantana gone straight to seeds without producing umbels of flowers?

I like your white lantana! I don't think I've seen any whites here (southern US).

Lantana camara can grow to a shrub 1-2 metres in height and spread - depending I suppose on your climate. I grow it in pots because it's not hardy here and it goes in the greenhouse in winter. Are you trying to grow a hedge, Boris?

Sorry gardeners! I'm very silly and didn't look deeper into my pot of Lantana. I prodded about amongst the leaves and realised there were two plants there - the one with seeds being a weed! Weed now removed and Lantana has a couple of flower bud heads and will probably have more now that the "cuckoo" has been removed and given it more light. Ooops!

Lovely colour mix. I(f it can only stand min 10C then that explains why we don't see it in Europe.

Your garden centers/greenhouses don't even carry them? We just treat them as annuals here.

We might be able to visit Wisley at the end of October. Do you think there will be much to see then? Is it worth going then?

Hi Chris,
I'm afraid I don't know enough to say what might be in season or not. This weekend there were plants at the end of their season and I suspect there will be seasons when Wisley is better.
Will it be worth going? I would say yes. There'll be the pinetum, national heather collection and glasshouse if nothing else. The glasshouse was opened last year and I have some photos of it from my visit, it's very impressive. I also suspect that the RHS know enough to make sure the rest of the gardens look great :o)
I enjoy just being outside so I think I'd like the gardens in any season. If you're there 17-20 October the 'taste of autumn' festival is on - I also have photos of that from our visit last year. Let me know if you decide to go.

Ah, so you'll miss the festival then. The glasshouse should be good as it's going through routine maintenance at the moment. We didn't actually go in when we visited this time as it was so nice outside but there was a sign up at the entrance saying sections would be closed over the next week or two. Should be all completed by the time you're here :o)

Members' notes...
Common lantana is a rugged evergreen shrub from the tropics. The species will grow to 6 ft (1.8 m) high and may spread to 8 ft (2.4 m) in width with some varieties able to clamber vinelike up supports to greater heights with the help of support. The leaves are 2-5 in (5-12.7 cm) long by 1-2 in (2.5-5 cm) wide with rounded tooth edges and a textured surface. Stems and leaves are covered with rough hairs and emit an unpleasant aroma when crushed (smells like cat pee). The small flowers are held in clusters (called umbels) that are typically 1-2 in (2.5-5.1 cm) across. In the tropics lantana is a non-stop bloomer. Where it is killed to the ground by frost the lantana blooms in summer and fall. Flower color ranges from white to yellow, orange to red, pink to rose in unlimited combinations, in addition the flowers usually change in color as they age. A lantana may look orange from a distance but the flowerhead is examined at close range it consists of individual white, yellow and red flowers that blend when viewed from afar.
Lantana is very easy to grow and will adapt to most soil types. Too much water and fertilizer will reduce bloom
Sun, part shade.
Well drained soil is preferred. Lantana is very drought resistant.
By seed or cuttings taken in the summertime. Lantana hybrids and named selections are propagated by cuttings.
We have bought Lantana the last two years for our pots out in the middle of the sun. They did beautifully last year, and so far the same. This years color choices were BEAUTIFUL!!!
Bought 4 plants on 5-08-08 from Green Shades Greenhouses for $2.79 each. It's the best buy of the summer ! These "shrubby" plants got huge and as long as I deadheaded them every day, they bloom continuously. I'll dig these and try to keep them once more over the winter. I have yet to suceed with that.
The hummers are really enjoying these late August/early Sept. and so do the butterflies. They are my favorite color combination (yellow & red).
Given to me by my friend Linda on 5-03-08. Hummers love Lantana but they don't even look at this pretty yellow and pink one compared to the reds and yellows.
