It is looking so delicate yet brave enough to be amongst the first blooms of the season.

Beautiful - I have only grown purples/blues - 'Harmony' and 'Pauline' - I love them because they come so early and they continue to look elegant even after flowering has ceased - have not grown a white variety before, but having seen this photograph I am convinced - I must have some!

I see some over-wintering cineraria in the background..I think. I really like that stuff...it even survives snow and -20 C. I would love to be able to garden in Feb. lucky you.

You are very observant - I think it is a much under-rated plant - only beginning to realise that now really - this winter it has been the one plant that has stopped our garden looking completely bare.

Have to admit I've just cheated and bought four ready planted pot of Iris reticulata (only a £1 and about six or seven shoots in each) - I love the deep purple colour, so going to interplant them with some primrose.

iI have to admit I did not take this one. It snowed in March 2007 when we were away, and a colleague went up to our house and took photos of our flowers in snow.
This year I got to take my own pics of our flowers in snow!!!!!

I have tried to do this ( I have to start indoors, as I have snow until end of March, to mid April... only 4C here today) Did you leave this pot out for the entire winter? How cold do you get? I am zone 3.

Members' notes...

Buzzbee

We have 2 on the go at this point (2nd February 2008) - 'Pauline', which is showing gorgeous blue hints of flowering and 'Harmony', which we have grown for a few years now. They are early flowers followed by elegant spires of foliage.

Chrispook

These miniature Iris bring delight as one of the early flowering spring bulbs. Scattered around the garden.

spritzhenry

What a pleasure when they open their sheaths and unfold!

Buzzbee

Very purple early Iris.

This is just one species in the Reticulata Group of irises, and a particularly memorable one for its bright sunny colouring. The vivid yellow blooms appear close to the ground very early, in February in a mild year, and a group of 10-12 bulbs at the front of a border will make an eye-catching patch of gold to brighten the short days. It is well worth planting a few more each year, because after flowering the bulbs tend to split into numerous small bulblets which take a few years to reach flowering size. The fragrant blooms are a good choice for containers, and may be forced in pots.

Iris reticulata is an early flowering iris, usually appearing from late winter to early spring. The blooms vary from pale blue to deep violet with central yellow splashes down the middle of each petal. In recognition of its outstanding excellence, the Royal Horticultural Society have given it their prestigious Award of Garden Merit (AGM).
Plant the bulbs 5-10cm (2-4in) apart at twice their own depth in well-drained, moderately fertile soil in sun or partial shade.
To propagate, divide bulbs from mid-summer to early autumn to increase stocks.
