Our fatsia developed three huge cream flower spikes last summer 2007.
It is in a container and has grown to over two metres high. It seems to need a lot of slow release food during the growing season, and we have to watch for caterpillars who seem to attack the leaves from time to time, but it is a lovely structural plant and gives good all year colour.

I just love the shape and waxy sheen of this plant's leaves. I Wish it was hardy in my zone garden.

Nice to know Grenville that these plants are happy in containers I might just put ours in one at least that way we can swap around whenever we like.Hel.xxx.

Members' notes...

This sits right next to my front door in the shade but seems to cope well with it.

Had for a couple of years, but is now thriving.

I love the leaves - I thought this one was rabbit proof... they don't eat the leaves but have taken a liking to the bark.

If creating a shrubbery this would be the first plant I would choose. Super glossy green leaves all year long with a wonderful architechtural shape. Interesting flowers as well. If it ever gets too big it can be pruned back severely or stems completely removed. Birds eat the seeds sit on the fence and drop them complete with their own manure. Some of my best plants have been grown that way. Seedlings around the bush will develop quickly. Sometimes prone to blackfly in the central new leaves.

Two of them in my garden. Were here when we moved and have survived the ruthless weeding out of dull or badly sited or overgrown and unwanted shrubs and trees that we've done. Both over 6 foot high and with lots of berries on.
