'Cut back buddleja'
Cut back hard in late winter
I cut this back too hard earlier this year, and although it has lots of shoots (thank goodness - I thought I'd killed it!) It is not going to flower this year, I suspect. Can anyone tell me how to cut it in the Autumn and prune it in the Spring please?

For the last couple of years many of the leaves on my Buddleja have wilted, turned yellow and dropped at the height of the season. It tends to recover o.k. towards autumn and foliage wise looks better now than ever it did in summer. I always prune hard around March. It is planted in a fully sunny spot in good soil. I'm wondering if the soil is too good!

Thanks - you are very reassuring! Tell you later if it does flower. Usually, I don't prune things hard enough, this year I pruned this very hard as well as a cotinus which had obviously not been pruned at all for years. It has some new growth which looks O.K. to me. It's showing in one of my photos in the back of the border. I didn't have to worry about flowers on that!

My mother in law had an 8' Weigela in her small courtyard garden. Too big for the space, so after flowering I 'pruned' it for her! The largest stem was 6" in diameter and this was cut down to ground level. After a week the new shoots appeared on it, and it's shooting away quite happily

thanks Saina - I guess I did panic a bit because I had cut it further back than I normally do! I think there are some flower buds forming at the moment!

Pruning hard in spring is the right thing to do to it! Even back to a twelve inch stump!!

My RHS Encyclopaedia says that Buddleja davidii prefers alkaline soil. I am just wondering what Ph your soil is - do you know? Just a thought. It also says 'grow in fertile well-drained soil', so I don't think that your soil will be too rich...

I've had one on acid soil too so I don't think that's going to be the problem. If it's only been the last couple of years, it might be lack of water and then too much! - lol

Poor Buddleja! All you can do really is what you have been - and IF we have a hot summer, give it a drink! At least you have the consolation that it recovers each time. What colour is it?

Me too. We like it because we need things that grow fast to fill our garden and give screening.

Yes, that as well and I am hoping it grows in front of this shed a neighbour has at the back and the window faces my garden!!
My cat keeps having a run for it and jumps in the window lol.
So it will block the view and block the way for my naughty cat lol

They just keep growing flowers and all. It Take off dead flower heads and you will encourage more flowers. Prune next March, cutting bach new growth to within about 4 ins of old wood. It sounds drastic, but after pruning it will go like a train.

In Dot's garden
large woody shrub (10 feet)
beautiful plume shaped flower heads in summer, scented and often covered by butterflies. Mine is lilac, but it is also found in deep mauves, red purples, as well as the white davidii.
This was pruned very hard in the spring - I really thought it might not recover - but here it is in flower!
This is by the pond to provide some shade and does its job by providing privacy, it has doubled since I moved it 5 years ago.
Been cut back once by my partner in autumn and then again a bit more by my father in winter, a bit more than I had intended thats for sure. And lots of waste to get rid of. Lets see how bushy it gets this year.
Got cut down once again by my father, so two lots of waste and a bare looking tree. However in April 2008 started to recover and springing growth again.
Three types:- Black Knight, Blue?, and white.. White new plant summer 2007. Blue in since 2006. Seem to do well here without going wild.
In June 2008 decided to buy 10 more plants 750F each from Dallaskert. We decided they grow faster than anything else for screening purposes. They are labelled white, pink, or lilac except one which has Royal R on it. The plan is to put about 4 in side bed to screen from neighbour, 2 in bed with Black Knight to hide the gate, and the rest in gaps around perimeter of garden. Some were dry so they are soaking first (4th June). will probably plant next week when we return from Romania.
Self seeds all over the garden.
Planted March 2008
I respect buddleja because they are survivers and I used to live near a railway and I used to enjoy looking at the buddleja growing from the wall at the back of my house.
That came free, but when I moved I had to buy one. Plus I enjoy the flowers on it.
As I have just moved to where I am now my plants are all new and not very big yet.
